Word Meanings:

  • بِمَلْكِنَا (bi-milkinā): By our own choice, will, or authority.
  • أَوْزَارًا (awzāran): Heavy burdens; here it refers to the heavy loads of gold and silver ornaments.
  • زِينَةِ الْقَوْمِ (zīnati al-qawm): The adornments and jewelry of the people (i.e., the Egyptians, from whom the Israelites had borrowed these items before the Exodus).
  • فَقَذَفْنَاهَا (fa-qadhafnāhā): So we threw it away; we cast it off.
  • أَلْقَى السَّامِرِيُّ (alqā as-Sāmiriyy): The Samiri threw (what he had).

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Musa (Moses) peace be upon him returned from the meeting with his Lord on Mount Tur and found his people worshipping the golden calf, he confronted them with anger and grief. They responded, seeking to justify their terrible action, saying: "O Musa, we did not break our promise to you by our own free will or deliberate choice. We were not rebellious by intention. Rather, we were burdened with heavy loads of the ornaments and jewelry belonging to the people of Pharaoh — items we had carried with us when we left Egypt. We threw these ornaments into a pit of fire, as the Samiri instructed us, to be rid of them. And just as we cast our ornaments into the fire, the Samiri also cast what he had with him — including the dust from the hoofprint of the horse of the angel Jibril (Gabriel) — and from that molten gold he fashioned a calf that made a lowing sound."

This was their excuse, but it was a weak one. They tried to shift blame and minimize their responsibility, yet the truth is that they had willingly followed the Samiri and allowed themselves to be led astray. Their claim of being compelled was not genuine, for they could have resisted and remained firm in their faith. The lesson here is profound: a believer must never surrender their judgment or their commitment to Allah and His Messenger, even under pressure or when others present tempting justifications. Excuses do not erase accountability, and the heart that truly fears Allah will stand firm even when the whole world seems to be drifting into error.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless warning for every believer: beware of the whispers of Shaytan and the influence of those who beautify misguidance. The people of Musa did not intend to worship a calf at the outset — they simply "threw away" some ornaments, and then the Samiri took advantage of that moment of weakness. Sin often begins with small compromises, with "harmless" actions, until it grows into something devastating. Guard your heart, hold fast to the Quran and the Sunnah, and never let anyone convince you that abandoning your principles is somehow excusable. True faith means standing firm, even when you stand alone. And when you stumble, rush back to Allah in sincere repentance, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 85-89 — Taha

[Allah] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Samiri has led them astray."
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw."
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
