Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿijl jasadan — a calf made of gold, shaped into a physical body without life.
  • lahu khuwār — it made a sound like the lowing of cattle, a miraculous deception.
  • fa-nasiya — meaning Moses "forgot" his god here, according to their false claim; or he "neglected" it and went searching for it elsewhere.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The Sāmirī, a man skilled in sorcery and deception among the Children of Israel, took the gold ornaments they had borrowed from the Egyptians and melted them down. From that molten gold, he shaped a calf — a lifeless body, yet one that emitted a sound resembling the lowing of a cow, a trick made possible by his cunning design. When the calf stood before them, the misguided ones among the people — those whose hearts were weak in faith and who had already inclined toward idolatry — declared boldly: "This is your god, and the god of Moses!" They claimed that Moses had forgotten his god here, or had gone astray in seeking it elsewhere. In truth, it was they who had forgotten the covenant of their Lord, and it was they who had strayed into the gravest of sins — associating partners with Allah, the Creator of all things.

This scene is a profound lesson for every believer: how easily a people can slip from the heights of faith into the depths of shirk when they lose sight of their purpose and allow their desires to overtake their reason. The Children of Israel had witnessed the parting of the sea, the manna and quails from heaven, and the very speech of Allah to their prophet — yet here they stood, bowing to a golden calf that could neither see, nor hear, nor benefit them in any way. How swift is the heart to wander when it is not anchored in remembrance of Allah!

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this story. If a people who saw such miracles could fall into idolatry, how much more must we guard our own hearts against the "calves" of our time — the distractions, the false gods of wealth, status, and fleeting pleasures that call to us from every direction? The Qur'an presents this narrative not merely as history, but as a mirror for our souls. Let it awaken in you a sincere commitment to tawḥīd — the pure worship of Allah alone. For He is the One who hears your prayers, answers your calls, and guides you through the darkness of this world. Do not let your heart be deceived by the noise of falsehood; cling to the rope of Allah, and you will never be lost. This is the beauty of Islam: it calls you back to your true nature, to the worship of the One who created you, sustains you, and loves you more than a mother loves her child. Answer that call today, and you will find peace that no golden calf — or worldly illusion — can ever provide.

📜 Verse 86-90 — Taha

So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw."
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
