So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"

So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"

Word Meanings:
"Asifan" (أَسِفًا): Deeply sorrowful and grieved, combined with intense anger.
"Al-'Ahd" (الْعَهْد): The period of time; here, the duration of Musa's absence from his people.
"Yahilla" (يَحِلَّ): To befall or become obligatory; to descend upon someone.
"Maw'idi" (مَوْعِدِي): My promise or covenant; the commitment Musa made to his people to return with the Torah.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After receiving the Torah from his Lord, Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) returned to his people only to find that they had fallen into the grave sin of worshipping the golden calf. His heart was filled with righteous anger—not out of personal pride, but out of deep concern for their faith—and profound grief for their deviation. He addressed them with a tone that combined sternness with compassion, saying: "O my people! Did your Lord not make you a beautiful promise—that He would grant you the Torah and guide you to Paradise? Did the time of my absence seem too long for you, causing you to forget His covenant? Or did you deliberately choose to bring down His wrath upon yourselves by this act of idolatry? Is that why you broke your promise to me—the promise to remain steadfast in obedience until I returned?"
Musa's words carry a powerful lesson: the covenant with Allah is sacred, and patience in awaiting His promises is a sign of true faith. When we rush ahead of Allah's commands or grow restless with His timing, we risk falling into disobedience. The people of Musa had witnessed countless miracles—the parting of the sea, the manna and quails from heaven—yet they still succumbed to impatience and doubt. This serves as a timeless reminder for every believer: hold firm to Allah's promise, trust His wisdom, and never let the trials of waiting lead you to compromise your faith. The path of righteousness requires steadfastness, and the reward of those who remain patient is far greater than any fleeting gratification of this world.
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw."
