Surah Al-Anbiya — Verse 5

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah Almighty exposes the stubbornness and confusion of the disbelievers of Quraysh when they were confronted with the Qur’an. They did not know what to say about it, so they contradicted themselves, each time offering a different excuse to reject the truth.

At one moment, they claimed that what the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought was nothing but a mixture of confused dreams he had seen in his sleep — visions with no true meaning. Then, they shifted and said: “No, rather he has fabricated it himself,” meaning he invented it and attributed it to Allah falsely. Then, they changed their position again and said: “No, he is a poet,” and that what he recited was merely poetry, not divine revelation.

These contradictory statements reveal their utter confusion and bad faith. They were not seeking the truth; they were merely looking for any excuse to reject the message, even if their excuses contradicted one another.

Then they went further and demanded: “Let him bring us a miracle like those sent with the earlier messengers.” They asked for a tangible, visible miracle — like the she-camel of Prophet Salih, the staff of Prophet Musa, or the miracles of Prophet ‘Isa — as if the Qur’an itself, with its unmatched eloquence and profound guidance, was not a sufficient miracle.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of those who reject the truth: they are never satisfied, and they keep moving the goalposts. When the truth is presented clearly, they dismiss it with baseless claims. When one excuse fails, they invent another. And when they are challenged to produce something similar, they cannot — yet they still refuse to believe.

But for the believer, this verse is a reminder of the immense value of the Qur’an. It is not poetry, nor magic, nor a confused dream — it is the living word of Allah, a miracle that remains with us today, challenging every generation to ponder its depth and beauty. No human being has ever been able to produce a chapter like it, and none ever will.

So hold fast to this Book, dear reader. Read it with reflection, and let it transform your heart. For in it is guidance, healing, and light — a treasure that the disbelievers of old rejected, but which the wise embrace with gratitude and love. And know that the greatest miracle is not a staff that turns into a serpent or a camel that emerges from a rock — but the Qur’an that still speaks to us today, guiding humanity from darkness to light.
