Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qaryah (قرية): Here it refers to the people of a town or civilization that came before.
- Ahlaknāha (أهلكناها): We destroyed them — meaning, We brought about their ruin and annihilation as a consequence of their rejection.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the stubbornness of the disbelievers of Makkah who repeatedly demanded miraculous signs from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a condition for their faith. They said: "Why is a sign not sent down to him from his Lord?" — demanding something extraordinary to prove his truthfulness.
Allah responds by drawing their attention to the historical reality: no town or people before them — who were given the very miracles they requested from their messengers — ever believed after receiving them. Instead, they persisted in denial and arrogance, and so Allah destroyed them. The pattern was consistent: when the signs came, they rejected them, and destruction followed.
So the verse poses a rhetorical question: "Then will these people believe?" — meaning, if they were given exactly what they asked for, would they truly have faith? The answer is no. Their hearts are not seeking truth; they are seeking excuses. Their nature is no different from those who came before, and their end would be the same if the same conditions applied.
However, there is a profound mercy in this: the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to all of humanity, and his nation was promised that it would not be destroyed collectively by a punishment that wipes it out entirely. Therefore, the miraculous signs that the disbelievers demanded were not granted in the form they requested, because the wisdom of Allah required that this nation remain until the Day of Judgment — and because the greatest miracle, the Qur'an, was already placed before them as a living, eternal proof.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on the mercy of your Lord! He did not destroy this nation as He destroyed those before it, even though their sins were great. Instead, He left the door of repentance open and sent a Book that challenges all of humanity to produce even a single chapter like it — and none have ever succeeded. The Qur'an is the eternal miracle, standing firm for over fourteen centuries, guiding hearts and transforming lives.
Do not be like those who demanded signs while the clearest sign was already before their eyes. Open your heart to the truth, and you will find that faith is not in need of miracles — it is in need of sincerity. The greatest miracle is that you are reading these words right now, and your heart is still beating, and the door of guidance is still open. Do not delay, for no one knows when the door will close.
