Word Meanings:
- Manāfiʿ (مَنَافِعُ): Benefits and utilities derived from something.
- Ajalin Musammā (أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى): A specified, fixed term or appointed time.
- Maḥilluhā (مَحِلُّهَا): The place where it becomes lawful to slaughter (the sacrificial animals).
- Al-Bayt al-ʿAtīq (الْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ): The Ancient House — referring to the Kaʿbah, and by extension, the entire sacred precinct (al-Ḥaram) of Makkah.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this blessed verse, Allah (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) reminds His servants of His immense kindness and the wisdom embedded in the rituals of Ḥajj. He says: "For you therein are benefits for a specified term; then their place of sacrifice is at the Ancient House."
The "benefits" refer to the sacrificial animals (budn) — camels, cows, and sheep — that pilgrims bring to the sacred precincts. Before these animals are designated as offerings (hady), the owner may freely benefit from them in permissible ways: riding them when needed, using their milk, wool, and hair, and even their offspring. This is a clear demonstration of Allah’s mercy — He does not burden His servants, but rather allows them to enjoy these creatures until the appointed time of sacrifice draws near.
The "specified term" is the moment when the pilgrim formally consecrates the animal as a sacrificial offering (by marking it or making the intention). From that point onward, the animal is dedicated solely to Allah, and its benefits are restricted — except for riding out of genuine necessity without causing harm to the animal, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) permitted.
Then Allah says: "Then their place of sacrifice is at the Ancient House." This means the culmination of this journey — the ultimate purpose — is the slaughtering of these animals within the sacred precincts of Makkah, the entire Ḥaram being the place of sacrifice. The Kaʿbah is called "al-ʿAtīq" (the Ancient) because it has been free from the domination of tyrants throughout history, and it is the oldest house of worship dedicated solely to Allah on earth.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, ponder the profound wisdom in this verse. Allah, in His infinite mercy, allows you to enjoy the very animals you will later sacrifice — teaching you that true devotion is not about harshness or deprivation, but about sincere giving at the right time and place. The journey of Ḥajj is a beautiful blend of worldly benefit and spiritual elevation: you ride, you drink milk, you clothe yourself with wool — all while your heart is attached to the House of Allah.
This verse also reminds us that every blessing in this life has a designated term, and ultimately, everything returns to Allah. Just as the sacrificial animal reaches its final destination at the Ancient House, so too does every soul return to its Creator. Let this inspire you to make your life a journey toward Allah — filled with gratitude for His benefits, and crowned with sincere devotion at the appointed time.
And what a magnificent honor it is to be among those who bring their offerings to the sacred precincts, following the footsteps of Prophet Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him), who submitted completely to his Lord. The Ḥaram is a place where tyrants have never prevailed, and where the hearts of the believers find peace. Strive, O servant of Allah, to be among those who answer the call of Ḥajj with love and humility, and let this verse increase your longing for the Ancient House — the qiblah of your prayers and the symbol of your unity with the ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
