Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sa'aw (سَعَوْا): They strove, exerted effort, or worked diligently — here it refers to their determined efforts in opposition.
  • Fi Ayatina (فِي آيَاتِنَا): Against Our signs, verses, and revelations — meaning the Qur'anic proofs and divine miracles.
  • Mu'ajizeen (مُعَاجِزِينَ): Those who seek to outrun or escape, thinking they can defeat or frustrate Allah's power; those who strive in rivalry, believing they can render Allah incapable of punishing them.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse follows directly from the previous one, where Allah describes the believers who will receive forgiveness and a generous provision. Now, Allah turns to the other group — those who have chosen the opposite path.

Allah says: *"And those who strove against Our signs, seeking to frustrate them — those are the companions of the Blazing Fire."*

These are people who did not merely reject the truth passively; they actively worked against it. They exerted their energy, time, and intellect in opposing the verses of Allah — mocking them, disputing them, and trying to weaken their impact on people's hearts. Their goal was to extinguish the light of guidance and to prove the message false.

The word *mu'ajizeen* carries a profound meaning. It describes people who thought they could outrun Allah's grasp — that they could escape His justice and that He would never catch up with them. They behaved as if they were in a race with Allah, believing they could win. They imagined that death would be the end, that there would be no resurrection, no accountability, and no punishment. They lived as though they had defeated the divine plan.

But Allah declares their end with absolute certainty: *"Those are the companions of the Blazing Fire."* The word "companions" (ashab) is significant — it means they will not merely pass through the Fire; they will dwell in it permanently, as inseparable as a companion is from their friend. They will be tied to it, and it to them, forever.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder for every soul: no one can outrun Allah. The one who strives against the truth will find that all their striving was in vain, and the Fire awaits them. But the one who strives in the path of Allah — with sincere faith and righteous deeds — will find forgiveness, provision, and eternal bliss.

Dear reader, reflect on this: where are you directing your efforts? Are you racing against Allah, or are you racing toward His pleasure? The choice is yours, and the destination is clear. Do not let your energy be spent in opposition to the truth, for no matter how fast you run, you can never escape the One who created you and knows your every move. Turn your striving toward what truly matters — and you will find that Allah's mercy is far greater than any punishment, and His Paradise is far more beautiful than anything this world can offer.

📜 Verse 49-53 — Al-Hajj

Say, "O people, I am only to you a clear warner."
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - for them is forgiveness and noble provision.
But the ones who strove against Our verses, [seeking] to cause failure - those are the companions of Hellfire.
And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.
