Key Words and Phrases:

  • Akhadhnahum bil-'adhab (أخذناهم بالعذاب): We seized them with punishment or affliction — meaning We tested them with calamities and hardships.
  • Istawanu (استكانوا): They humbled themselves, submitted, or showed meekness and submissiveness.
  • Yatadarra'un (يتضرعون): They supplicate with humility, pleading earnestly, and showing deep need before Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah Almighty informs us about the condition of the disbelievers and the stubborn-hearted when He sends down trials upon them. He says: "And indeed, We seized them with punishment" — meaning We afflicted them with various forms of hardship: famine, drought, loss of wealth, and even the sword and killing, as a wake-up call and a means of correction. Yet, despite these severe tests, "they did not humble themselves to their Lord" — they did not soften, submit, or show meekness before Him. Their hearts remained hard, their pride unbroken, and their arrogance intact. "Nor did they supplicate in humility" — they did not raise their hands in earnest prayer, nor did they cry out to Allah with sincere desperation when calamity struck. Instead of turning to their Creator in repentance and need, they persisted in their defiance and transgression, as if these trials were merely random events rather than divine signals calling them back to the Straight Path.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the purpose behind trials and tribulations. Allah sends difficulties upon people not to destroy them, but to awaken their hearts, to remind them of their weakness and utter dependence upon Him, and to draw them closer to His mercy. When a person faces hardship and responds with humility, supplication, and repentance, that trial becomes a means of elevation and purification. But when one faces hardship with stubbornness and heedlessness, the trial only increases their distance from Allah and hardens their heart further.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. When difficulties come your way — whether illness, financial strain, loss, or any form of distress — what is your response? Do you turn to Allah with a broken heart, humbling yourself before Him and pleading for His mercy? Or do you become bitter, impatient, and turn away? The believer understands that every trial is an invitation from Allah — an invitation to come closer, to remember Him, to repent, and to strengthen the bond of servitude. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that "amazing is the affair of the believer; verily all of his affairs are good for him. If something good happens to him, he is thankful, and that is good for him. If something harmful happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him." So when the storms of life rage, let your heart find its anchor in Allah. Humble yourself before Him, raise your hands in sincere supplication, and know that He is the One who removes harm and answers the call of the distressed. Do not let hardship pass you by without drawing you nearer to your Lord — for that would be the greatest loss of all.

📜 Verse 74-78 — Al-Mu'minun

But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.
And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.
And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus]
Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.
And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.
