(We had mercy on them): Bestowed upon them compassion and kindness.
(We removed): Lifted away and eliminated.
  • ضُرّ (harm): Affliction, hardship, drought, and famine.
  • لَلَجُّوا (they would have persisted): They would have continued obstinately and stubbornly.

  • يَعْمَهُونَ (wandering blindly): Straying and staggering in confusion, unable to see the right path.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse reveals a profound truth about the nature of those who reject faith. Allah tells us that even if He had shown mercy to these disbelievers by lifting the affliction that had befallen them—the severe drought and famine that struck them as a consequence of their denial of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—they would not have reformed or returned to the truth. Instead, they would have persisted even more stubbornly in their disbelief and arrogance, wandering blindly and staggering in their confusion, lost in the darkness of their own transgression.

This verse highlights a crucial spiritual reality: affliction and hardship can serve as a wake-up call for the heart, prompting reflection and repentance. But for those whose hearts have become hardened by persistent sin and arrogance, even relief from hardship does not lead them back to Allah. Their rebellion becomes so deeply ingrained that they continue in their error, unable to see the light of guidance even when it shines before them.

The verse serves as a warning that mercy alone is not enough for those who have closed their hearts to the truth. It also demonstrates the wisdom of Allah in His dealings with humanity—He knows what is in the hearts of His servants, and His decisions are always based on perfect knowledge and justice.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own heart. How do you respond when Allah relieves your difficulties? Do you turn to Him in gratitude and obedience, or do you become even more heedless and arrogant? The believer understands that every ease and every hardship comes from Allah, and both are opportunities to draw closer to Him. When trials come, they purify the soul and remind us of our utter dependence on our Creator. When ease comes, it is a test of gratitude and humility.

Do not be like those who only remember Allah in times of distress and forget Him in times of comfort. Rather, be among those whose faith grows stronger in both ease and hardship, who see every moment of life as an opportunity to worship and draw nearer to their Lord. For Allah's mercy is vast, but it is granted to those who open their hearts to Him with sincerity and humility. Let this verse be a gentle reminder that the greatest blessing is not the removal of hardship, but the guidance of the heart toward the straight path.

📜 Verse 73-77 — Al-Mu'minun

And indeed, you invite them to a straight path.
But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.
And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.
And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus]
Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.
