Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- فتحنا عليهم بابًا ذا عذاب شديد: We opened upon them a gate of severe punishment.
- مبلسون: Utterly despairing, broken, speechless with grief and hopelessness—having lost all hope of any good or relief.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the disbelievers’ stubbornness and arrogance. Despite all the signs, warnings, and reminders sent to them, they persisted in their denial and mockery of the truth. Then comes the decisive moment: when Allah—by His perfect wisdom and justice—opens upon them a gate of severe punishment, they are suddenly plunged into a state of utter despair. They become completely broken, speechless, and overwhelmed by hopelessness, realizing that no escape, no relief, and no good remains for them. This punishment refers to the overwhelming chastisement of the Hereafter, and according to some interpretations, it also includes the severe afflictions they faced in this world, such as the defeat at Badr—a foretaste of the greater torment to come.
The verse paints a vivid picture of the transition from arrogance to utter helplessness. Those who once mocked the truth and turned away in pride are now reduced to silence, their hopes shattered, their excuses gone, and their fate sealed. This is the natural consequence of persistent rejection of divine guidance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder of the reality of accountability. Allah, in His infinite mercy, gives people every opportunity to return to Him—through signs, messengers, and countless blessings. But when a soul persists in arrogance and denial, the moment of reckoning inevitably arrives. At that point, no wealth, no power, and no worldly status can save a person. The door of repentance remains open in this life—so why wait until the door of punishment is opened? Turn to your Lord today with a sincere heart, for He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving. He delights in the return of His servant and wipes away all sins for those who seek His forgiveness. Do not let pride and stubbornness lead you to a state of despair from which there is no return. Embrace the light of faith now, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.
