Key Words and Phrases:

  • Tastanisū (تَسْتَأْنِسُوا): This means to seek permission and make yourselves known before entering, so that the people inside are not startled or caught off guard.
  • Tusallimū (تُسَلِّمُوا): To greet with the Islamic greeting of peace (*As-salāmu ʿalaykum*), which is a prayer for safety and blessings upon the residents.
  • Tadhakkarūn (تَذَكَّرُونَ): To be reminded and take heed, so that you reflect and act upon what is best for you.

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His guidance! Do not enter any house other than your own without first seeking permission from its occupants and greeting them with peace. The established way, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is to say: *"As-salāmu ʿalaykum"* (Peace be upon you) and then ask, *"May I enter?"* This act of seeking permission and offering the greeting is not merely a formality—it is a profound sign of respect, modesty, and care for the privacy and dignity of others. It protects both the visitor and the host from embarrassment or discomfort.

This command is better for you in every way: it preserves your honor, strengthens bonds of love and trust within the community, and reflects the beautiful manners Islam instills in its followers. Perhaps, by practicing this, you will be reminded of Allah’s wisdom and mercy in every aspect of your life, and you will strive to obey Him in all matters, both great and small.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Imagine the peace and harmony that would fill our homes and societies if every knock on a door was preceded by a sincere greeting of peace and a gentle request for permission. This simple act, commanded by Allah, transforms daily interactions into acts of worship and kindness. It teaches us to honor one another, to value privacy, and to approach each other with warmth rather than intrusion. Islam is not merely a religion of rituals; it is a complete way of life that elevates even the smallest social etiquettes into opportunities for reward and closeness to Allah. By following this guidance, you open the doors not only to homes but also to hearts, and you embody the noble character that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent to perfect. Let this verse inspire you to be a person of gentleness and respect, for indeed, Allah loves those who are mindful of others and who strive to live by His perfect wisdom.

📜 Verse 25-29 — An-Nur

That Day, Allah will pay them in full their deserved recompense, and they will know that it is Allah who is the perfect in justice.
Evil words are for evil men, and evil men are [subjected] to evil words. And good words are for good men, and good men are [an object] of good words. Those [good people] are declared innocent of what the slanderers say. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.
O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants. That is best for you; perhaps you will be reminded.
And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.
There is no blame upon you for entering houses not inhabited in which there is convenience for you. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
