Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Tāba (تاب): To turn back, to repent, to return from sin and disobedience.
- ʿAmila Ṣāliḥan (عمل صالحًا): To perform righteous deeds, acts of obedience and virtue that align with Allah's commands.
- Matāban (متابًا): A return, a turning back — specifically a return to Allah that is sincere, accepted, and pleasing to Him.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse comes as a door of hope and mercy, opening wide after the preceding verses described the severe consequences awaiting those who commit major sins — shirk (associating partners with Allah), unjust killing, and adultery. After mentioning the punishment, Allah immediately follows with this verse to show that His mercy encompasses everything, and that no sinner should despair.
The verse states: *"And whoever repents and does righteous deeds, then indeed he has turned to Allah with a genuine return."*
This means: Whoever abandons his sins, feels deep remorse for what he has done, and proves the sincerity of his repentance by performing good deeds — such as prayer, charity, fasting, and avoiding what Allah has forbidden — then his repentance is a true and accepted repentance. He has returned to Allah in the most perfect manner, and Allah, in His infinite mercy and generosity, accepts that return and erases the sins that preceded it.
The phrase "turns to Allah with a genuine return" emphasizes that true repentance is not merely words uttered by the tongue, but a complete transformation of the heart and actions. It is a turning of the entire being toward Allah — leaving disobedience behind, and embracing obedience with sincerity and steadfastness.
A Call to the Reader:
O servant of Allah, do not ever despair of Allah's mercy, no matter how great your sins may be. This verse is a direct address to you, telling you that the door of repentance is open, and that Allah is waiting for your return. He is the One who invited you to repent even after you have disobeyed Him — this is the ultimate sign of His love for you. He does not need your obedience, yet He calls you back to Him because He wants to honor you and forgive you.
So hasten to repent today, before tomorrow. Let your repentance be sincere, accompanied by righteous deeds that prove your truthfulness. And know that when you turn to Allah, He turns to you with mercy, forgiveness, and acceptance. Your past sins will be wiped away, and your evil deeds will be replaced with good ones. This is the promise of the Most Merciful, and He never breaks His promise.
Return to your Lord with a heart that is humble and sincere, and you will find Him the Most Forgiving, the Most Compassionate — a Lord who rejoices in the repentance of His servant more than a traveler who finds his lost camel in the desert. Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and purify themselves.
