Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الزور (Az-Zur): Falsehood, lies, and everything that is corrupt or invalid—including false testimony, idolatry, and attending gatherings of sin and immorality.
- اللغو (Al-Laghw): Vain, worthless speech or actions—anything trivial, sinful, or devoid of benefit.
- كرامًا (Kiraman): With dignity and honor—passing by while keeping themselves noble and untouched by the filth of sin.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to describe the beautiful qualities of the true servants of the Most Merciful (Allah). These are people of purity and honor, and their character shines in two remarkable ways:
First, they do not bear false witness, nor do they attend places where falsehood and corruption prevail. They do not sit in gatherings of sin, whether these involve lying, cheating, mockery of religion, or any form of disobedience to Allah. They distance themselves from all that is false—and the greatest falsehood of all is associating partners with Allah (shirk). Their presence is not found in such places, and their tongues are not used to support lies.
Second, when they happen to pass by vain or worthless matters—whether it be idle chatter, obscene speech, or sinful behavior—they do not stop to engage with it. They pass by with dignity, keeping their hearts and minds pure. They do not linger, they do not listen with interest, and they do not participate. Instead, they move on gracefully, as if they are too noble to be touched by such filth. They even feel a sense of honor in distancing themselves, and they would never wish such things for others either.
This is the mark of a believer: not only avoiding sin, but also avoiding the environments and occasions where sin occurs. A believer protects their time, their ears, their eyes, and their tongue. They understand that their soul is too precious to be wasted on trivialities, and their honor is too great to be compromised by falsehood.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine the beauty of a person who walks through life with this level of dignity. They are not dragged into every argument, not entertained by every joke, and not swayed by every trend. They have a standard, and that standard is the pleasure of Allah. When they pass by evil, they do not even turn their heads. When they hear falsehood, they do not lend their ears. This is true honor—not the honor of wealth or status, but the honor of a soul that refuses to be polluted.
Islam teaches us that our time and our character are trusts from Allah. Every moment we spend in vain talk, every step we take toward a place of sin, and every word we say in support of falsehood is a loss. But the one who passes by with dignity gains something far greater: the love of Allah, the respect of the angels, and a heart that is at peace.
Let this verse inspire you to raise your standards. You are a servant of Allah—the Most Merciful, the Most High. Your worth is not in joining the crowd, but in standing apart with honor. When you see evil, walk away with grace. When you hear falsehood, remain silent and move on. And when you are tested, remember that your dignity is in your obedience to Allah.
May Allah make us among those who pass by falsehood with honor, and who are described as His beloved servants. Ameen.
