Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Qurrata a'yun" (قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ): Literally "coolness of the eyes" — an Arabic idiom meaning something that brings great joy, comfort, and tranquility to the heart, causing tears of happiness to be cooled rather than hot tears of sorrow. It refers to that which delights and reassures the soul.
- "Imaman" (إِمَامًا): A leader, guide, or model to be followed — someone whose words and actions are worthy of emulation in righteousness.
The Interpretation:
This verse describes the beautiful supplication of the true servants of the Most Merciful — those who are described in the preceding verses as walking upon the earth with humility, spending their nights in worship, and seeking refuge from the torment of Hell. Their hearts are so connected to their Lord that even their personal desires are framed as acts of worship.
They call out: *"Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and our offspring comfort of the eyes."* They do not merely ask for spouses and children — they ask for spouses and children who will be a source of spiritual and emotional peace. They long for partners who are righteous, loving, and supportive of their faith, and for children who are obedient, pious, and upright — children whose very presence brings serenity to the heart and whose character reflects the beauty of Islam. They understand that a family built upon faith is a garden of Paradise in this world.
Then they add: *"And make us leaders for the righteous."* They do not ask for worldly power or authority over people, but rather for the honor of being examples of goodness — models whose lives inspire others to draw closer to Allah. They desire to be imams in truth, guiding others through their actions before their words, so that the righteous may look upon them and be encouraged in their own journey of faith.
This dua teaches us a profound lesson: the believer's highest aspirations are not limited to personal salvation. They extend to building a righteous family and becoming a source of guidance for the wider community. The believer sees themselves as part of a greater whole — a link in the chain of righteousness that connects the generations.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect upon this magnificent supplication. How often do we ask Allah for good spouses and children, yet forget to ask that they be a *comfort to our eyes* in faith? How often do we seek positions of influence, yet forget to seek the position of being a *leader in righteousness*?
This verse teaches us that the most valuable treasures in this life are not wealth or status, but a family that brings peace to the soul and a character that others can safely follow. It shows us that Islam elevates even our family life into an act of worship, and our social influence into a means of drawing nearer to Allah.
Make this dua your own. Let it roll upon your tongue in the depths of the night and in the moments between your daily affairs. For when you ask Allah for righteousness in your family and leadership in goodness, you are asking for the very essence of happiness in this world and the next. And know with certainty that the One who hears this call is the Most Generous, the Most Giving — and He never turns away a sincere supplication.
