Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ذُكِّرُوا (dhukkirū): They were reminded, admonished, or exhorted.
- بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ (bi-āyāti rabbihim): With the signs/verses of their Lord — referring to the Qur’anic revelations and the divine proofs of Allah’s oneness and power.
- لَمْ يَخِرُّوا عَلَيْهَا (lam yakhirrū ʿalayhā): They do not fall upon them — i.e., they do not rush to them or receive them in a state of heedlessness.
- صُمًّا وَعُمْيَانًا (ṣumman wa ʿumyānan): Deaf and blind — meaning as if they neither hear nor see the truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes a hallmark quality of the true servants of the Most Merciful (ʿibād al-Raḥmān): when they are reminded of Allah’s verses — whether through the recitation of the Qur’an or through the observable signs of creation — they do not turn away in stubborn disregard, as if they were deaf to the message and blind to the evidence. Rather, their hearts are wide awake, their ears are attentive, and their eyes are open to the truth. They do not merely hear the words and let them pass by; instead, they pause, reflect, and submit. The phrase “they do not fall upon them deaf and blind” means they do not approach the verses with closed minds or hardened hearts, nor do they dismiss them out of arrogance or negligence. On the contrary, they lean in with sincere attention, eager to understand and obey. Their response is one of humility and reverence — they bow down in prostration to Allah, their hearts softened and their souls illuminated by the reminder.
Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this beautiful trait: the believers described here are not those who merely hear the Qur’an; they are those who *live* it. When the verses of Allah reach their ears, their hearts tremble with awe, their minds engage with reflection, and their limbs respond in obedience. This is the secret of their peace and success — they never let pride or distraction block the light of guidance. Imagine the difference between a person who listens to the Qur’an as background noise and one who listens as if every verse is a personal letter from the Creator. The latter finds in every reminder a fresh reason to draw closer to Allah, to correct a fault, to renew a vow of devotion. This is the path to true happiness in this life and the next. So, when you are reminded of Allah’s signs — in the Qur’an, in nature, in the events of your life — do not let your heart be deaf or your eyes blind. Open yourself to the message, let it transform you, and fall before your Lord in humble submission. That is the way of those whom Allah loves and honors.
