Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jahadū (وَجَحَدُوا): They denied and rejected, refusing to acknowledge the truth despite knowing it.
- Istayqanat-hā (وَاسْتَيْقَنَتْهَا): Their inner selves were fully certain and convinced of its truth.
- Ẓulman (ظُلْمًا): Out of injustice and transgression against the right.
- ʿUlūwan (عُلُوًّا): Out of arrogance, pride, and haughtiness.
- ʿĀqibat al-Mufsidīn (عَاقِبَةُ الْمُفْسِدِينَ): The final outcome and end of those who spread corruption.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah, the Most High, sent His clear, undeniable miracles to Pharaoh and his people through Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) — the staff that turned into a serpent, the shining hand, and the other signs — they did not merely disbelieve out of ignorance. Rather, their hearts were absolutely certain that these signs came from Allah and that Musa was truly His Messenger. Yet, they rejected them with their tongues and refused to acknowledge the truth.
Why? Because of two corrupt motives: ẓulman — their injustice and deliberate transgression against the truth, and ʿulūwan — their arrogance and pride that prevented them from submitting to a prophet from among the Children of Israel when they considered themselves superior.
This is the most severe form of disbelief: knowing the truth in your heart, yet denying it with your tongue out of pride and stubbornness. They were not confused or uncertain — they were defiant.
Allah then says: "So see how was the end of the corrupters." This is a call to reflect and take heed. What happened to Pharaoh and his army? They were drowned in the sea — utterly destroyed, their power, wealth, and arrogance brought to nothing. Their corruption in the land, their oppression of the believers, and their rejection of Allah's signs led to their complete annihilation.
This verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity: Arrogance against the truth and injustice are the paths to destruction. No matter how powerful or established a person or nation may seem, the end of those who spread corruption on earth is always ruin — in this life and the next.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for every soul. It teaches us that the greatest tragedy is not ignorance, but knowing the truth and turning away from it out of pride. How many people today see the beauty of Islam, the logic of its message, and the miracles of the Qur'an, yet their ego prevents them from submitting?
The Qur'an is filled with signs that call to the intellect and the heart. When you encounter the truth, do not let arrogance block your path. Humility before Allah is the key to salvation. The one who lowers themselves in submission to their Creator will be raised in honor, while the one who raises themselves in arrogance will be brought low.
Let the fate of Pharaoh be a warning: no tyrant, no matter how mighty, can escape the justice of Allah. And let it also be a source of hope: the door of repentance is open until the moment of death. Do not be like those who knew the truth and rejected it — be among those who, when the truth becomes clear, accept it with sincerity and humility.
