Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- وَرِثَ (waritha): Inherited, succeeded.
- مَنطِقَ الطَّيْرِ (mantiqa al-tayr): The speech or language of birds — i.e., the ability to understand their sounds and communications.
- الْفَضْلُ الْمُبِينُ (al-fadl al-mubeen): The clear, manifest grace and bounty.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Prophet Sulayman (Solomon), peace be upon him, inherited from his father Prophet Dawud (David), peace be upon him, not merely wealth or worldly possessions, but something far greater — the inheritance of prophethood, knowledge, and kingship. This was a divine selection, for inheritance among prophets is the inheritance of faith, wisdom, and leadership, not of material riches.
Then, Sulayman, peace be upon him, turned to his people and addressed them with gratitude and humility, saying: "O people, we have been taught the language of birds." This was a miraculous gift from Allah — the ability to comprehend the sounds and communications of birds, a knowledge no human could attain by their own effort. And he added: "And we have been given of everything" — meaning every needful thing that prophets and kings require, whether matters of this world or the Hereafter, from dominion and wisdom to miracles and divine support.
Then he concluded with a profound statement of recognition: "Indeed, this is the clear, manifest bounty." He acknowledged that all of this was not from his own merit or effort, but purely from Allah's grace and favor — a favor so evident and distinct that it set him apart from all others. This was not boastfulness, but rather a declaration of gratitude and a testimony to Allah's generosity, as he openly attributed every blessing to its true Source.
This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson: true greatness lies not in what we possess, but in how we acknowledge the Giver. Sulayman, despite his immense power and unique miracles, did not say "I have achieved this" — rather, he said "We have been taught" and "We have been given," attributing everything to Allah. This is the hallmark of the prophets and the righteous: they see every blessing as a trust from Allah, and they use it to draw closer to Him, not to become arrogant.
Moreover, this verse highlights the honor Allah bestows upon His chosen servants. Just as He taught Sulayman the language of birds and granted him a kingdom unmatched in its splendor, He grants His sincere servants wisdom, understanding, and success in ways they never imagined. When we open our hearts to Allah's guidance and remain grateful for His favors, He opens doors of knowledge and provision that no one can close.
So, dear reader, reflect on this: if the birds' speech was a gift to a prophet, then the ability to understand the Qur'an, to communicate with people, and to live a life of purpose is a gift to you. Cherish it, use it in obedience to Allah, and always say, as Sulayman did: "This is from the bounty of my Lord."
