Tafsir (Explanation):
When Prophet Sulayman (Solomon), peace be upon him, and his mighty army of jinn, humans, and birds reached the Valley of the Ants, a wise and caring ant—fearing for her fellow creatures—called out to them: "O ants, enter your dwellings quickly, lest Sulayman and his armies crush you without even realizing it!" Her words were filled with compassion and foresight, a remarkable display of intelligence and care for her community.
Upon hearing this, Sulayman, peace be upon him, smiled—a gentle, silent laugh—amazed and delighted by the ant's wisdom, her keen awareness, and her sincere warning to her kind. This moment of wonder turned his heart toward his Lord, and he was moved to gratitude. He realized that Allah had blessed him with the ability to understand the speech of all creatures, a gift beyond measure, and he felt the weight of that favor upon him and upon his parents.
So he turned to Allah in humble supplication, saying: "My Lord, inspire me and grant me the ability to be grateful for the favor You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You. And admit me, by Your mercy, into the company of Your righteous servants."
In this beautiful prayer, Sulayman, peace be upon him, teaches us the essence of true gratitude: it is not merely to say "thank you" with the tongue, but to recognize the blessing, to use it in obedience, and to seek Allah's help in maintaining that gratitude. He also shows us the importance of honoring one's parents by acknowledging their role in his life and including them in his supplication. And finally, he asks for the highest aspiration—to be gathered with the righteous, not by his own merit, but by Allah's mercy, for it is only through Allah's mercy that anyone enters Paradise.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this profound moment: a mighty king, ruler of the earth, stops to listen to a tiny ant—and smiles. This is the humility and attentiveness that faith instills in a believer. Sulayman, peace be upon him, did not see the ant as insignificant; rather, he saw in her words a sign of Allah's wisdom and a reminder of His boundless creation.
This story invites you to reflect on your own life: How often do you pause to notice the small blessings around you? How often do you thank Allah for the gift of Islam, for your parents, for your abilities? And how often do you ask Him to make your deeds pleasing to Him?
Let this supplication of Sulayman become your own. Repeat it in your prayers, in your moments of reflection, and in your daily life. For it encompasses the three greatest aspirations of a believer: gratitude for past blessings, righteousness in present actions, and hope for eternal success in the Hereafter. And know that Allah, the Most Merciful, never turns away a servant who calls upon Him with a sincere heart.
