Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Atumiddūnani" (أتمدونني): Do you provide me or increase me with something, seeking to please or influence me?
- "Bi-māl" (بمال): With wealth or worldly possessions.
- "Fa mā ātāniya Allāh" (فما آتاني الله): What Allah has given me — referring to prophethood, kingship, and abundant blessings.
- "Tafraḥūn" (تفرحون): You rejoice and take delight.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Queen of Sheba’s messenger arrived with the precious gift, Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) responded with noble disdain and profound wisdom. He rejected the offering outright, saying: "Do you seek to extend me with wealth?" — meaning, are you trying to buy my favor or divert me from my mission with worldly riches? He then declared the true measure of value: "What Allah has given me is far better than what He has given you." For Sulayman had been granted prophethood, an unparalleled kingdom, and the subjugation of the wind, the jinn, and the birds — blessings that no amount of gold or silver could ever match. He made it clear that he had no need for their material gifts, for his treasure was in the Hereafter and in the divine favor bestowed upon him.
Then he exposed their shallow motive: "Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift." This was a gentle yet piercing critique — the people of Sheba took pride in worldly ornaments and delighted in exchanging lavish presents, but they failed to recognize the greater truth: that true honor lies not in possessions, but in faith and submission to Allah. Sulayman’s response was not born of arrogance, but of a heart fully content with what Allah had given him, and a soul that saw through the illusions of worldly grandeur.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this scene deeply. Here was a king — the most powerful ruler of his time — who turned away a fortune with a single sentence. Why? Because his heart was anchored in something far greater. He knew that the gifts of Allah — guidance, wisdom, and righteous deeds — are treasures that never fade, while worldly wealth is but a fleeting shadow. This teaches us a timeless lesson: do not measure your worth by what you own, but by what you carry in your heart. When you are content with Allah’s decree and trust in His provision, no gift, no bribe, and no worldly temptation can sway you from the path of truth. Let Sulayman’s example inspire you to elevate your ambitions beyond the dust of this world, and to seek the eternal reward that Allah has prepared for those who are patient and grateful. For indeed, the believer who is rich in faith is far wealthier than the one who is rich in gold.
