Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Phrases:

  • Rabbi (My Lord): A call of intimate supplication, acknowledging Allah's absolute lordship and care.
  • Bimā an‘amta (By what You have bestowed upon me): Referring to the specific favors of repentance, forgiveness, strength, wisdom, and knowledge that Allah had granted Moses.
  • Dhahīr (Supporter/Helper): One who lends aid, assistance, or backing to another.
  • Al-Mujrimīn (The criminals): Those who persist in wrongdoing, sin, and disbelief.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the profound moment when Moses, peace be upon him, was guided to strike the Egyptian who had been fighting with a man from his own people—an act that resulted in the Egyptian's death—Moses was filled with remorse and immediately turned to his Lord in sincere repentance. Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgave him. Yet, upon waking the next day, Moses found himself in another confrontation, and as he moved to assist the Israelite again, he realized that the man he had killed the day before was now his adversary. It was then that the truth dawned upon him, and he understood the gravity of his situation.

In this verse, Moses, peace be upon him, makes a solemn and heartfelt pledge to his Creator. He says: "My Lord, by the favor You have bestowed upon me—by Your forgiveness, Your mercy, and the strength and wisdom You have granted me—I will never be a supporter of the criminals."

This is a vow of profound commitment. Moses is not merely asking for something; he is making a covenant with Allah. He recognizes that the greatest protection from falling into sin is the very grace of Allah. He acknowledges that the strength he has is a trust from Allah, and he vows to use it only in obedience, never in support of wrongdoing. He declares his complete disassociation from the path of the transgressors, promising to never again lend his hand, his words, or his status to aid anyone in sin or disbelief.

This verse beautifully illustrates the transformative power of repentance. When a person truly understands the mercy of their Lord, it ignites within them a burning desire to change. It is not merely a feeling of guilt, but a proactive resolution to align one's entire life with the pleasure of Allah. Moses, a man of immense physical and spiritual strength, submits that strength to the will of Allah, making it a tool for justice and righteousness, not for the support of evil.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear believer, this is the essence of true faith. When we recognize the countless blessings of Allah upon us—our health, our intellect, our wealth, our very existence—we must ask ourselves: how are we using these gifts? Are we using them to build, to help, and to guide? Or are we, consciously or unconsciously, supporting the causes of wrongdoing?

The example of Moses is a timeless lesson. It teaches us that no matter our past mistakes, the door of repentance is always open. And when we walk through that door, we must emerge with a new resolution: "I will never be a supporter of the criminals." This means we must be careful about the company we keep, the words we speak, and the actions we take. We must stand firmly with truth and justice, even if it is against our own interests or the interests of those we love.

Let this verse be a shield for you. Whenever you are tempted to compromise your principles, remember the vow of Moses. Remember that true honor lies not in supporting the powerful, but in supporting the truth. May Allah grant us the strength to always be on the side of righteousness and to never be a helper to those who transgress His limits.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Al-Qasas

And he entered the city at a time of inattention by its people and found therein two men fighting: one from his faction and one from among his enemy. And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and [unintentionally] killed him. [Moses] said, "This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest, misleading enemy."
He said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me," and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
He said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
And he became inside the city fearful and anticipating [exposure], when suddenly the one who sought his help the previous day cried out to him [once again]. Moses said to him, "Indeed, you are an evident, [persistent] deviator."
And when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, he said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and do not want to be of the amenders."
