Word Meanings:

  • Yabtisha (يَبْطِشَ): To seize or strike with force, to attack or grab someone violently.
  • Jabbār (جَبَّار): A tyrant, one who oppresses and dominates others unjustly, a violent ruler who kills and wrongs people.
  • Al-Muslihīn (الْمُصْلِحِينَ): Those who bring about reconciliation and peace, who set things right between people and act for the common good.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse takes us to a critical moment in the life of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) in Egypt, before his prophethood was fully established. The day before, Musa had accidentally killed a Coptic man while defending an Israelite who was being oppressed. Now, on this second day, Musa saw the same Israelite man fighting with another Coptic Egyptian. When Musa moved to strike the Coptic man—who was an enemy to both Musa and the Israelite—the Israelite man misunderstood his intention. He thought Musa was coming to punish him for his earlier harsh words, so he cried out: "O Musa! Do you intend to kill me as you killed a soul yesterday?"

The Israelite man then accused Musa of wanting to become a tyrant on earth, a violent oppressor, rather than one who brings peace and reconciliation among people. This was a painful moment for Musa—his good intention was misread, and his secret from the previous day was exposed. The news of this incident reached Pharaoh and his chiefs, who then began plotting against Musa.

There is profound wisdom here. This was a test from Allah for His future prophet. Musa (peace be upon him) was learning patience, self-control, and the importance of guarding one's actions even in moments of righteous anger. The very man he had helped twice became the cause of his trial. Yet Allah used this situation to prepare Musa for the greater mission ahead—standing before the greatest tyrant of his time, Pharaoh himself.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this story teaches us that even the best intentions can be misunderstood by people. Musa (peace be upon him) wanted justice, but he was accused of tyranny. In your own life, when you strive to do good, people may misinterpret your actions. Do not let that discourage you. Allah knows your true intentions, and He is the Best of Judges. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the falsest of speech" (agreed upon). So be slow to judge others, and be quick to forgive, just as Musa would later learn to control his anger and become the gentle, wise leader Allah chose him to be.

This verse also reminds us of the beauty of Islam: it calls us to be among the *muslihīn*—those who mend relationships, spread peace, and never use power to oppress. The greatest jihad is to control one's anger. Let us strive to be people of reconciliation, not confrontation; people of mercy, not harshness. For Allah loves those who are just and merciful, and He promises His support to those who forgive and seek peace.

📜 Verse 17-21 — Al-Qasas

He said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
And he became inside the city fearful and anticipating [exposure], when suddenly the one who sought his help the previous day cried out to him [once again]. Moses said to him, "Indeed, you are an evident, [persistent] deviator."
And when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, he said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and do not want to be of the amenders."
And a man came from the farthest end of the city, running. He said, "O Moses, indeed the eminent ones are conferring over you [intending] to kill you, so leave [the city]; indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisors."
So he left it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."
