📖 English Meaning
And when Moses had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of the mount a fire. He said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I will bring you from there [some] information or burning wood from the fire that you may warm yourselves."

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qaḍā al-Ajal — Completed the term/period agreed upon.
  • Ānasa — Perceived/saw with his own eyes.
  • Aṭ-Ṭūr — The mountain (specifically Mount Sinai in this context).
  • Jadhwah — A burning piece of wood or ember, a brand from a fire.
  • Taṣṭalūn — To warm yourselves (seek warmth from the cold).

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) had faithfully fulfilled the full ten-year term he had agreed to serve for his righteous father-in-law in Madyan — completing the best of the two periods offered — he set out with his family on the journey back to Egypt. As they traveled through the night in the cold darkness, Musa suddenly caught sight of a fire blazing on the side of Mount Ṭūr in the distance.

Seeing his family weary, cold, and in need of rest, he said to them with the tenderness of a caring husband and father: "Stay here and wait for me. I have seen a fire. Perhaps I can bring you some news from it — for in that direction may lie the road we seek — or at the very least, I will bring you a burning brand from that fire so that you may warm yourselves against this bitter cold."

Little did Musa know that this seemingly ordinary fire would be the gateway to the most extraordinary moment of his life — the moment when Allah would speak to him directly, honor him with prophethood, and send him on the greatest mission a human being could ever receive. What appeared to be a simple need for warmth and direction became the divine appointment that would change history forever.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: never underestimate the seemingly small moments of your life. Musa was simply trying to help his family — to find warmth and guidance — and in that sincere effort, Allah opened for him the door to divine revelation. When you sincerely serve others and seek goodness, Allah may place before you opportunities far greater than you ever imagined.

Notice also the beautiful character of Musa: even as a prophet-in-waiting, he did not abandon his family in the cold. He asked them to wait, promised to return, and cared for their comfort. This is the noble character Islam cultivates — responsibility, compassion, and presence for those who depend on you. The fire that Musa saw was not just physical light; it was the light of guidance that Allah had prepared for him. And just as Allah guided Musa through that fire, He guides every sincere seeker of truth through the light of the Qur'an and the Sunnah — if only we open our hearts and take that first step, even when we think we are only looking for warmth.

📜 Verse 27-31 — Al-Qasas

He said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allah wills, from among the righteous."
[Moses] said, "That is [established] between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no injustice to me, and Allah, over what we say, is Witness."
And when Moses had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of the mount a fire. He said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire.
But when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in a blessed spot - from the tree, "O Moses, indeed I am Allah, Lord of the worlds."
And [he was told], "Throw down your staff." But when he saw it writhing as if it was a snake, he turned in flight and did not return. [Allah said], "O Moses, approach and fear not. Indeed, you are of the secure.
