Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse unveils the nature of Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, who was consumed by arrogance and tyranny. He exalted himself in the land, claiming absolute power and dominion, and divided its people into factions to control them more effectively. Among these groups, he singled out the Children of Israel (Banū Isrāʾīl) for systematic oppression. He ordered the slaughter of their newborn sons, fearing that a prophesied boy from among them would one day end his reign, while he spared their women to serve and be humiliated. This was not merely an act of cruelty but a calculated strategy of subjugation, designed to break their spirit and erase their identity. The verse concludes by declaring that Pharaoh was among the corrupters—those who spread mischief and injustice across the earth, defying the order of their Creator.
Reflection and Daʿwah:
This verse is a timeless lesson in the consequences of unchecked pride and the abuse of power. Pharaoh, despite his immense might and resources, could not escape the decree of Allah. His tyranny only hastened his downfall, as Allah responded to the cries of the oppressed and sent Moses (peace be upon him) to liberate them. For us today, this story is a call to place our trust in Allah alone, knowing that no tyrant, however powerful, can thwart His will. It also reminds us of the dignity of every human being—Islam stands firmly against oppression in all its forms, whether it be the slaughter of innocents or the humiliation of any people. Let this verse inspire you to stand for justice, to protect the weak, and to never despair of Allah’s help, for His promise to the oppressed is certain: victory and relief, in this life or the next.
