  • Al-Qurūn al-Ūlā (الْقُرُونَ الْأُولَىٰ): The earlier generations — referring to the nations that came before Musa, such as the people of Nuh (Noah), ‘Ad, Thamud, the people of Lut (Lot), and the people of Madyan (Midian).
  • Baṣā’ir (بَصَائِرَ): Plural of *baṣīrah* — inner sight, insights, or clear proofs that enlighten the heart and mind, enabling one to distinguish truth from falsehood.
  • Hudā (هُدًى): Guidance — direction toward what is right and beneficial, leading one away from error.
  • Raḥmah (رَحْمَةً): Mercy — a blessing from Allah that brings goodness and protection in this life and the Hereafter.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, in His infinite wisdom and justice, tells us that He gave Musa the Book — the Torah — *after* He had destroyed the earlier nations. Those nations had rejected their messengers and persisted in disbelief and corruption, so Allah’s punishment overtook them as a just consequence. This timing was not random; it carried profound purpose.

The Torah was given as baṣā’ir — inner lights and clear evidences for humanity. Just as the eye sees physical objects, the heart sees truth through these insights. The Torah illuminated what benefits people — guiding them to act upon it — and what harms them — warning them to avoid it. It was a source of guidance (hudā), pulling people out of the darkness of ignorance and misguidance into the light of faith and righteousness. And it was a mercy (raḥmah) for those who believed in it and lived by its teachings, for it contained the keys to success in both worlds.

Allah says: *“Perhaps they may remember”* — meaning, so that the people might reflect on Allah’s blessings upon them, recognize His favors, and respond with gratitude and faith rather than denial and arrogance. The destruction of previous nations was a lesson, and the giving of the Torah was a gift — together they called humanity to wake up, take heed, and turn to their Lord.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless message for every soul. Allah’s mercy is always near, even after trials and punishments. When He sends guidance, it is an invitation to life — a life of clarity, purpose, and peace. The Quran, like the Torah before it, is a light for the heart. It shows you the path to success, warns you of the pitfalls, and wraps you in mercy if you embrace it. So open your heart to this Book, reflect on its verses, and let it transform you. Do not be like those who saw the signs yet turned away — rather, be among those who remember, give thanks, and find true happiness in the shade of Allah’s guidance.

📜 Verse 41-45 — Al-Qasas

And We made them leaders inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
And We caused to overtake them in this world a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be of the despised.
And We gave Moses the Scripture, after We had destroyed the former generations, as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded.
And you, [O Muhammad], were not on the western side [of the mount] when We revealed to Moses the command, and you were not among the witnesses [to that].
But We produced [many] generations [after Moses], and prolonged was their duration. And you were not a resident among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses, but We were senders [of this message].
