Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- La‘nah (لَعْنَةً): Being cast out from Allah’s mercy, accompanied by disgrace and humiliation.
- Al-Maqbūḥīn (الْمَقْبُوحِينَ): Those who are repelled with abhorrence, disfigured in countenance, and driven far from all that is good.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah informs us of the fate that befell Pharaoh and his people—a fate that serves as a timeless lesson for all who witness or hear of it. In this worldly life, Allah caused them to be pursued by a curse: a state of disgrace, divine wrath, and rejection that clung to them wherever they went. Their power, wealth, and grandeur did not shield them from this humiliation; rather, their very names became synonymous with tyranny and ruin. Their legacy in this world is one of shame, and their end in the Hereafter is even more severe—on the Day of Resurrection, they will be among those who are repelled from Allah’s mercy, their faces disfigured, their deeds abhorrent, and their souls cast far away from any hope of salvation.
This verse carries a profound reminder: the pursuit of worldly dominance, arrogance, and transgression against Allah’s commands does not bring lasting honor. Instead, it brings a curse that follows a person in this life and seals their fate in the next. The punishment of Pharaoh and his people was not merely a historical event—it is a living sign for every generation that the mighty are brought low when they defy their Creator, and that no power on earth can protect against the justice of Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is the path of humility and obedience in contrast! While the tyrants are pursued by curses, the believers are pursued by mercy. While the arrogant are disfigured on that Day, the humble are honored and brought near to their Lord. Let this verse inspire you to turn away from pride and wrongdoing, and to seek the pleasure of Allah in all that you do. For the one who lives in obedience to Allah carries a light in this world and a radiant face in the next—while the one who lives in defiance carries a weight of disgrace that no wealth or status can ever remove. Choose the path that leads to eternal honor, and let the example of Pharaoh be a warning that never fades from your heart.
