Word Meanings:
- نُتَخَطَّفْ (nukhattaf): To be snatched away, seized, or taken by force — referring to being attacked, killed, or captured by enemies.
- حَرَمًا آمِنًا (ḥaraman āminan): A sacred, secure sanctuary — referring to the Holy Sanctuary of Makkah, where fighting and bloodshed are forbidden.
- يُجْبَىٰ (yujbā): To be gathered, brought, or collected from various places.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers of Quraysh in Makkah made an excuse to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he called them to Islam. They said: "If we follow the guidance you have brought and abandon our idols and deities, the surrounding Arab tribes will overpower us. They will snatch us from our land — killing us, taking us captive, and plundering our wealth."
But Allah responds to their false excuse with a powerful reminder: Did We not establish them in a sacred sanctuary — the Haram of Makkah — a place of complete safety and security? In this very land, bloodshed is forbidden, oppression is prohibited, and no enemy dares to attack them. Even in the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), when tribes across Arabia were constantly raiding and fighting one another, the people of Makkah remained safe and unharmed wherever they went, solely because of the sanctity of this sacred place.
Moreover, Allah brought to them the fruits of all things — provisions, trade, and sustenance from every corner of the earth — as a mercy and blessing from Him. Caravans came to them from distant lands, and they enjoyed abundance and prosperity while others struggled.
Allah then states: "But most of them do not know." They fail to recognize the magnitude of these blessings. They do not understand that the One who protected them and provided for them in their state of disbelief would certainly continue to protect and provide for them if they embraced the truth. Their fear was baseless, for Allah's power and protection are not limited by their circumstances. Had they believed, Allah would have granted them even greater security and honor.
The deeper lesson here is profound: How often do we make excuses to avoid following the truth? We fear losing our jobs, our status, our comfort, or our safety. But the One who sustains us and protects us is Allah Himself. If we sincerely turn to Him, He will never abandon us. Rather, He will open doors of provision and security that we never imagined. The people of Makkah feared the loss of their worldly position, yet Allah reminded them that He was the source of all their security and sustenance — and He remains the source of all security and sustenance for every believer who trusts in Him.
This verse also carries a beautiful call to reflect: Allah has given us countless blessings — safety, provision, family, and faith. Do we truly appreciate them? Do we let gratitude lead us to obedience? The Qur'an repeatedly invites us to open our eyes and hearts to these realities, so that we may live with certainty and peace, not with fear and excuses.
