Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- Batriat (بَطِرَتْ): Became arrogant and insolent due to their abundant wealth and comfortable life; they transgressed all bounds in their enjoyment of worldly blessings.
- Ma’ishataha (مَعِيشَتَهَا): Their livelihood and the luxurious, prosperous life they were given.
- Masakinuhum (مَسَاكِنُهُمْ): Their dwellings, homes, and cities.
- Al-Warithun (الْوَارِثِينَ): The Inheritors — meaning Allah alone remains after all creation perishes, inheriting the earth and everything on it.
Explanation of the Verse:
How many towns and civilizations did We destroy because their people became arrogant and ungrateful for the blessings We bestowed upon them! They were so consumed by their wealth, comfort, and pleasures that they forgot their Creator, rejected His messengers, and indulged in sin and transgression. Their prosperity became a source of their ruin rather than gratitude.
After their destruction, their homes and cities became desolate ruins. No one inhabited them afterward except a few travelers passing through for a brief moment — a day or an hour — before moving on. The palaces they once took pride in, the gardens they enjoyed, and the wealth they hoarded all became lifeless reminders of their fate.
And We — Allah — are the true Inheritors of everything. All creation will perish, and We alone will remain. The earth and all that is upon it will return to Us, and every soul will be brought back for judgment. Nothing escapes Allah’s knowledge, and no one can flee from His justice.
A Da’wah Reflection:
This verse is a profound wake-up call for every soul that becomes infatuated with the fleeting pleasures of this world. How many nations built towering cities, accumulated immense fortunes, and lived in luxury — only to be wiped away in an instant when they turned away from their Lord? Their palaces now lie in ruins, their names are forgotten, and their wealth benefited them nothing.
Dear reader, do not let your comfort and success make you forget the One who gave them to you. Every blessing you enjoy today is a test — will you be grateful and obedient, or will you become arrogant and heedless? The world is but a passing shadow; the Hereafter is the eternal abode. Let these ruins be a lesson: the only inheritance that truly matters is the one you prepare for yourself in the Hereafter through faith, gratitude, and righteous deeds. Turn to Allah before the journey ends, for He is the Most Merciful, ever ready to forgive those who return to Him.
