Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Ta-hdi" (تَهْدِي) – To guide; in this context, it refers to the guidance of *tawfeeq* (divine enablement and success in embracing faith), not merely conveying the message.
  • "Aḥbabta" (أَحْبَبْتَ) – The one you loved or wished to see guided, such as a close relative or dear companion.
  • "Al-muhtadeen" (الْمُهْتَدِينَ) – Those who are rightly guided; those whom Allah knows are prepared and sincere in seeking the truth.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), you do not possess the power to guide whomever you love or desire to see enter the fold of Islam. Your noble role is to convey the message, call to the truth, and exemplify it with your character—but the matter of guidance rests solely with Allah. He alone grants the gift of faith to whom He wills, and He withholds it from whom He wills, in accordance with His infinite wisdom and perfect knowledge.

This verse was revealed in a context of deep emotional significance: the Prophet’s earnest longing for his beloved uncle, Abu Talib, to embrace Islam. Abu Talib had protected and supported him throughout his mission, yet he remained upon the religion of his forefathers until his death. The Prophet’s heart ached for him, but Allah clarified that even the most beloved of people cannot be guided by personal effort alone. Guidance is a divine prerogative—a light that Allah places in the hearts of those He knows are sincerely seeking the truth and are prepared to receive it.

And Allah is the All-Knowing of those who are truly deserving of guidance. He knows the hidden depths of every heart, the sincerity of every intention, and the readiness of every soul to accept the truth. His knowledge encompasses all that is apparent and concealed, and His wisdom in guiding or not guiding is always just and perfect.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer and caller to Islam. It reminds us that our duty is to deliver the message with wisdom, kindness, and patience—but the outcome is never in our hands. We may love people dearly, yearn for their salvation, and exhaust ourselves in advising them, yet the final decision belongs to Allah alone. This frees us from despair and anxiety: we plant the seeds, water them with sincerity, and leave the growth to Allah.

At the same time, this verse humbles us. It reminds us that faith is a treasure from Allah—a gift we should never take for granted in ourselves or in others. If you are a believer today, it is only by Allah’s mercy and grace. So be grateful, and let that gratitude translate into compassion for those who have not yet found the light. Do not judge them, do not give up on them, and do not lose hope—for Allah may guide them at any moment, just as He guided you.

And if you are one who loves someone who has not yet embraced Islam, let this verse strengthen your resolve to keep praying for them, keep showing them the beauty of this religion through your actions, and keep trusting in Allah’s wisdom. Your love for them is a gift, but Allah’s love for them is greater. He knows what is best, and His timing is always perfect.

May Allah make us among the rightly guided, and may He guide our loved ones to the straight path. Ameen.

📜 Verse 54-58 — Al-Qasas

Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend.
And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant."
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
And they say, "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land." Have we not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly. And it is We who were the inheritors.
