Key Words and Phrases:

  • "فَالْتَقَطَهُ" (fa-iltaqatahu): "Picked him up" or "found him" — meaning they came across him without seeking him, as the term *iltiqat* implies finding something unintentionally.
  • "آلُ فِرْعَوْنَ" (Ālu Fir'awn): The household, court, or followers of Pharaoh — including his officials, servants, and soldiers.
  • "عَدُوًّا وَحَزَنًا" (ʿaduwwan wa ḥazanā): "An enemy and a source of grief" — meaning he would become their adversary and bring them sorrow and ruin.
  • "خَاطِئِينَ" (khāṭi'īn): "Sinners" or "wrongdoers" — those who deliberately commit errors and transgressions, particularly in their disbelief and tyranny.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah inspired the mother of Moses (peace be upon him) to place her infant in a chest and cast it into the river, the chest floated along the Nile until it reached the palace of Pharaoh. There, the household of Pharaoh found the child and picked him up — but they had no idea that this very child, whom they took in as a helpless baby, was destined by Allah to be the one who would challenge their tyranny and bring about their downfall. The verse beautifully highlights the irony of their action: they picked him up "to be for them an enemy and a source of grief." This was not their intention, but it was Allah’s decree — that the very means of their supposed security would become the instrument of their destruction. Their own hands carried the one who would shatter their kingdom.

This is a profound lesson in the divine wisdom: no matter how powerful or cunning a tyrant may be, Allah’s plan prevails. Pharaoh had ordered the slaughter of every newborn Israelite boy out of fear that a liberator would rise among them. Yet, the very child he sought to kill was brought into his own home, raised under his own care, and protected by the One who controls all affairs. The verse then states: "Indeed, Pharaoh and Haman and their soldiers were sinners." Their sin was not merely a mistake — it was a deliberate, persistent transgression. They were arrogant in their power, oppressive in their rule, and defiant in their disbelief. They killed thousands of innocent children, enslaved the Children of Israel, and corrupted the earth — yet their schemes only hastened their own ruin.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, look at how Allah turns the plans of the oppressors upside down! Pharaoh thought he was securing his throne by killing the boys, but Allah preserved Moses in the very house of his enemy. This teaches us that no power on earth can stand against the will of Allah. When you face hardship or feel that your enemies are overwhelming you, remember that Allah is the Best of Planners. He may bring you out of the depths of the sea, from the heart of the enemy’s camp, and place you in a position of honor — just as He did for Moses.

This story also reminds us of the beauty of trusting Allah. The mother of Moses was commanded to do something that seemed terrifying — casting her infant into a river — but she obeyed, and Allah fulfilled His promise to return her son to her and make him a prophet. So, trust Allah in every situation, for His wisdom is beyond our comprehension, and His mercy encompasses all things. Let this verse strengthen your faith and fill your heart with hope: the tyrants of this world, no matter how mighty, are but weak creatures before Allah, and their end is always loss, while the believers’ end is always victory — in this life and the Hereafter.

And establish them in the land and show Pharaoh and [his minister] Haman and their soldiers through them that which they had feared.
And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers."
And the family of Pharaoh picked him up [out of the river] so that he would become to them an enemy and a [cause of] grief. Indeed, Pharaoh and Haman and their soldiers were deliberate sinners.
And the wife of Pharaoh said, "[He will be] a comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not.
And the heart of Moses' mother became empty [of all else]. She was about to disclose [the matter concerning] him had We not bound fast her heart that she would be of the believers.
