Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bitanah (بِطَانَة): Close advisors, intimate companions, or confidants—those who are taken into one's inner circle and entrusted with secrets. It is derived from the inner lining of a garment (the part closest to the body).
- Min Doonikum (مِن دُونِكُم): From outside your faith and community—i.e., from among the disbelievers and hypocrites, not from among the believers.
- La Ya'aloonakum Khabalan (لَا يَأْلُونَكُمْ خَبَالًا): They will not spare any effort in causing you harm, corruption, and ruin. They spare no pains to corrupt your affairs and bring about your downfall.
- Waddoo ma 'anittum (وَدُّوا مَا عَنِتُّمْ): They wish and long for what causes you hardship, distress, and difficulty.
- Badat al-Baghdaa (بَدَتِ الْبَغْضَاءُ): The hatred and enmity have become apparent and visible.
- Afwahihim (أَفْوَاهِهِمْ): Their mouths—meaning their speech and words.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! Allah, in His infinite mercy and care for His believing servants, issues a profound and protective command: Do not take as your inner circle of confidants and intimate advisors those who are not from among you—meaning those who do not share your faith, whether they are disbelievers or hypocrites. This is not merely a suggestion; it is a divine safeguard for the unity, security, and well-being of the Muslim community.
Why? Because such people, no matter how friendly or close they may appear, will not spare any effort to corrupt you and bring about your ruin. They tirelessly work to sow discord, spread harm, and undermine your affairs. Their hearts are filled with a deep-seated desire for your hardship and suffering—they wish for nothing more than to see you in distress and difficulty. This is their true nature, even if they hide it behind smiles and kind words.
Allah then points to the evidence of their enmity: Hatred has already appeared from their mouths. Their tongues betray them—through their mockery, their criticism of your religion, their attempts to divide you, and their leaking of your secrets. But here is the crucial warning: what their hearts conceal is far greater and more severe than what their mouths have already revealed. The visible hostility is merely the tip of the iceberg; the hidden malice in their chests is immense and unrelenting.
Allah concludes with a call to reason: We have made the signs and proofs clear to you—showing you the reality of these people and warning you against them—if only you would use your intellect. The one who truly reflects and understands will heed this warning and protect himself and his community from such harmful associations.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful expression of Allah's love and protection for the believers. Just as a loving parent warns their child about harmful friends, Allah—the Most Merciful—warns us about those who wish us harm. He does not leave us ignorant; He shows us the signs and gives us the clarity we need to navigate our relationships wisely.
Islam teaches us to be kind, just, and compassionate toward all people—including non-Muslims—but it also teaches us to be wise and discerning. We can deal with people fairly and maintain good relations, but we must never place our complete trust and inner secrets in those whose hearts are set against our faith and our community. This is not paranoia; it is prudence. It is a divine guidance that protects our religion, our families, and our societies from those who would seek to destroy them from within.
So, dear believer, take this verse as a shield. Be loving and open-hearted, but be wise in choosing your closest companions. Surround yourself with those who share your values and wish you well—those who will support you in goodness and protect you in times of need. And always remember: Allah has given you this guidance because He loves you and wants what is best for you, in this life and the next.
