Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Sarr" (صِرّ): A bitterly cold, destructive wind accompanied by extreme frost or freezing.
- "Harth" (حَرْث): Cultivated land, crops, or a farm that people have planted and invested in with hope of harvest.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
Allah, the Most High, presents a striking and profound parable to illustrate the reality of what the disbelievers spend in this worldly life, whether in acts of apparent charity, feeding the poor, or supporting causes they deem noble. They do all this while hoping for reward, recognition, or some benefit in return. Yet, because their hearts are devoid of true faith and their intentions are not purely for Allah's sake, their deeds are utterly hollow and doomed to perish.
The likeness of their spending is like a severe, freezing wind that strikes the farmland of a people who had wronged themselves through their own sins and disobedience. These farmers had planted their crops with great hope and expectation, anticipating a bountiful harvest. But when that icy, destructive wind swept over their land, it completely destroyed the crops, leaving nothing behind — no grain, no fruit, no benefit whatsoever. All their effort, time, and resources were wasted in an instant.
Similarly, the disbelievers spend their wealth and energy in this life, yet because their foundation is built upon disbelief (kufr) and rejection of Allah's messengers, their deeds are rendered null and void. In the Hereafter, they will find no reward for what they did, just as those farmers found no harvest from their ruined crops. Their hopes will be shattered, and their efforts will be in vain.
And here lies the profound justice of Allah: He does not wrong them in the least. He is Al-'Adl (The Just), and His judgment is perfect. Rather, it is they who wrong themselves. They chose disbelief, they chose to reject the truth, and they chose to turn away from the guidance that was sent to them. Their own hands brought about their ruin, and their own choices sealed their fate.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful imagery. How often do we invest our time, wealth, and energy into things that will not last? How often do we build our hopes on foundations that can be swept away by a single gust of wind? The message of this verse is timeless: only that which is built upon faith in Allah and sincerity to Him will endure. Everything else, no matter how impressive it may appear in this fleeting world, is like that crop destroyed by the freezing wind — beautiful for a moment, but ultimately worthless.
The doors of repentance are always open. Do not let your heart remain in a state where your good deeds are lost. Turn to Allah sincerely, embrace Islam with a pure heart, and spend your wealth and your life in ways that will truly benefit you in the eternal life to come. For Allah is Most Merciful, and He accepts the sincere repentance of His servants, transforming their past misdeeds into rewards. Do not be among those who wrong themselves — be among those who hasten to the mercy of their Lord, for His mercy encompasses all things.
