Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes the beautiful qualities of the people of Taqwa (piety) — those who have truly embraced faith and are promised Paradise. These are not merely theoretical believers; their faith is reflected in their actions, their character, and their relationship with Allah.
First, they are patient (As-Sabireen) — patient in obeying Allah's commands even when it is difficult, patient in refraining from sins and desires that tempt the soul, and patient in facing the trials and hardships that Allah decrees in their lives. They do not complain or despair; rather, they trust in Allah's wisdom and await His reward.
Second, they are truthful (As-Sadiqeen) — truthful in their speech, never lying or deceiving, and truthful in their actions, meaning their deeds match their words. Their sincerity is consistent in both private and public, for they know Allah sees all.
Third, they are devoutly obedient (Al-Qaniteen) — they submit to Allah with complete devotion, standing in prayer, humbling themselves before Him, and obeying His commands with full commitment. Their obedience is not partial or selective; it is total and sincere.
Fourth, they are spenders (Al-Munfiqeen) — they spend their wealth in the way of Allah, whether in secret or openly, helping the poor, supporting good causes, and fulfilling the rights of others. They understand that wealth is a trust from Allah and that spending for His sake purifies the soul and increases provision.
Fifth, and most beautifully, they are those who seek forgiveness in the last hours of the night (Al-Mustaghfireen bi'l-As'har) — they wake up in the darkness of the pre-dawn hours, when people are asleep, and they turn to Allah in sincere repentance, supplication, and prayer. This is the most blessed time of the night, a time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks: "Who is asking Me, so that I may give him? Who is seeking forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?" Their hearts are free from distractions, and their tears flow in humility before their Lord.
These five qualities — patience, truthfulness, obedience, spending, and seeking forgiveness at dawn — are the hallmarks of true believers. They are not just words; they are a way of life. And this verse was revealed in the context of the Christians of Najran, but its message is universal and timeless for every Muslim who aspires to draw closer to Allah.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at these beautiful qualities and ask yourself: Are these reflected in my life? The door of Allah's mercy is always open, and the time of Sahar is a golden opportunity that many of us waste in sleep. Imagine standing before your Lord in the stillness of the night, pouring out your heart to Him, seeking His forgiveness for your shortcomings, and asking Him for your needs. This is the secret of the righteous — they have found the treasure of intimacy with Allah in the darkest hours, and they have tasted the sweetness of faith that no worldly pleasure can match.
Islam is not a religion of mere rituals; it is a complete transformation of the heart and soul. These qualities are attainable for every one of us, step by step. Start with truthfulness in your speech, then add patience in your daily struggles, then commit to obedience, then give in charity even a little, and finally — wake up just before Fajr and whisper to your Lord: "O Allah, forgive me." You will find a peace that words cannot describe.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, and He says: 'Who is calling upon Me, so that I may respond to him? Who is asking of Me, so that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?'" (Sahih Muslim). So do not miss this priceless moment — it is your appointment with the Most Merciful.
