Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Reehan" (ريحًا): A wind — here, a harmful, destructive wind that spoils crops and vegetation.
  • "Musfarran" (مُصْفَرًّا): Turned yellow — indicating that the green, thriving plants have withered and lost their vitality.
  • "Laẓallū" (لَظَلُّوا): They would remain or continue — emphasizing persistence and continuity in their reaction.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most Merciful, draws our attention to a profound human reality through a vivid example from nature. He says: If We send a destructive wind upon their crops and plants, and they see their once-green fields turn yellow and wither away, they would — despite all the previous blessings We had granted them — persist in ingratitude and denial. They forget the countless seasons of abundance, the rains that nourished the earth, and the fruits that sustained them. In a moment of hardship, they turn away and deny the very Source of those blessings.

This verse highlights a weakness in human nature: when times are good, we often forget to thank the Giver; when a trial strikes, we may fall into despair and even disbelief. The Qur'an gently rebukes this attitude, reminding us that hardship is a test, not a sign of abandonment. The same Lord who sent the wind is the One who sends the rain, and His mercy encompasses all circumstances.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for our own hearts. How often do we remember Allah in ease, and how do we react in difficulty? The believer is one who recognizes that both the green field and the yellowing one are from Allah — and that after every hardship comes relief. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who thank Allah in prosperity and remain patient and hopeful in adversity. For the One who controls the winds and the seasons is the same One who hears your prayers and knows your struggles. Turn to Him with a grateful heart, and He will never abandon you.

📜 Verse 49-53 — Ar-Rum

Although they were, before it was sent down upon them - before that, in despair.
So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah - how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that [same one] will give life to the dead, and He is over all things competent.
But if We should send a [bad] wind and they saw [their crops] turned yellow, they would remain thereafter disbelievers.
So indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs, retreating.
And you cannot guide the blind away from their error. You will only make hear those who believe in Our verses so they are Muslims [in submission to Allah].
