Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mawtā (الموتى): The dead — here referring to those whose hearts are spiritually dead, having lost the capacity to receive guidance.
- Al-Summ (الصم): The deaf — those who are physically or metaphorically deaf to the truth, unable or unwilling to hear the message.
- Al-Du'ā' (الدعاء): The call or invitation — specifically here, the call to monotheism and the message of the Qur'an.
- Wallaw Mudbirīn (ولّوا مدبرين): They turned away and retreated — indicating a state of complete rejection and deliberate avoidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger of Allah, just as you cannot make the physically dead hear your voice, and just as you cannot make the deaf hear your call — especially when they have turned their backs and walked away from you — likewise, you cannot force guidance upon those whose hearts have become dead to the truth and whose ears have become sealed against the call of monotheism. Their state is one of complete spiritual insensitivity; they have chosen to distance themselves from the message, and their rejection is a matter of their own will and obstinacy.
This verse is a profound consolation from Allah to His beloved Prophet (peace be upon him). It teaches us that the Prophet's mission was not to compel belief, but to convey the message with clarity and sincerity. The outcome of guidance rests solely with Allah, for He alone turns hearts and opens ears. The Prophet did everything in his power — he called, he warned, he taught, and he wept for his people — yet the decision to accept or reject remained with them.
The comparison to the dead and the deaf is not an insult to those people, but a vivid illustration of their spiritual reality. A dead person cannot hear, no matter how loudly you call. A deaf person cannot respond, no matter how clearly you speak. And when such a person deliberately turns away, the possibility of reaching them becomes even more remote. This is the state of those who have hardened their hearts against the truth — they are alive in body but dead in spirit, able to hear but choosing not to listen.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer and every caller to Islam. It reminds us that our duty is to convey the message with wisdom and beautiful preaching, not to obsess over results. We plant the seeds; Allah brings forth the harvest. Do not let the rejection of others discourage you, for even the greatest of messengers faced the same. Instead, focus on your sincerity, your character, and your perseverance.
And for those who read this verse today — let it awaken your heart. Do not be among those who are described as deaf and dead to the truth. Open your ears to the call of Allah, respond to His Messenger, and let your heart be alive with faith. For the Qur'an is a healing for what is in the breasts, and a guidance and mercy for the believers. Do not turn away from it, lest you become like those who heard the call but walked away — only to regret it when no regret can avail them.
