- "لَا تَغْلُوا" (Do not go to extremes): Do not exceed the proper limits in your religion by adding false beliefs or practices.
- "وَكَلِمَتُهُ" (His Word): The word of command from Allah, "Be," through which Jesus was created.
- "أَلْقَاهَا إِلَىٰ مَرْيَمَ" (He cast it to Mary): He conveyed this word to Mary through the angel Gabriel, making it a reality in her womb.
- "وَرُوحٌ مِّنْهُ" (A spirit from Him): A soul created by Allah, honored by its attribution to Him; it does not mean a part of Allah or a divine essence.
- "ثَلَاثَةٌ" (Three): The Christian doctrine of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- "وَكِيلًا" (A Trustee/Guardian): The One who manages all affairs, suffices for His creation, and is worthy of full reliance.
The Interpretation:
O People of the Book—especially the Christians—Allah calls you with compassion and clarity: do not go to extremes in your religion, and do not attribute to Allah anything but the truth. Do not claim that He has a wife or a son, for such words are falsehood against His majesty. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is but a noble messenger of Allah, sent with the truth to guide humanity. He was not divine, nor the son of God; rather, Allah created him through His mighty word "Be," which He conveyed to Mary through the angel Gabriel. Thus, Jesus came into existence by the will of Allah, and his soul was a creation from Allah, honored and distinguished—yet fully human, a servant of Allah.
So believe in Allah alone, and believe in all His messengers without discrimination, for they all called to the same truth: the oneness of Allah. Do not say that Allah is three—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—for this is a grave error that corrupts the pure faith. Stop this false claim, and your stopping will be better for you in this life and the Hereafter. Indeed, Allah is only One God, far exalted and utterly free from having a son. How could He have a child when He owns everything in the heavens and the earth? All creation is His possession, and He is the sole Creator and Sustainer. He is completely self-sufficient and in need of nothing, while all creation is in absolute need of Him. And Allah alone is sufficient as a Trustee and Guardian over all affairs—so place your trust in Him, for He will never fail those who rely on Him.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a shining beacon of mercy and guidance, inviting the People of the Book to return to the pure, untainted truth that all prophets—from Adam to Jesus, and finally Muhammad (peace be upon them all)—came with: the absolute oneness of Allah. It corrects misconceptions with gentleness and wisdom, showing that Jesus (peace be upon him) was a beloved messenger, a miracle of creation, yet a servant of Allah. How beautiful is this faith that honors Jesus while preserving the majesty of Allah! It calls us to shed all falsehood, embrace the truth, and find peace in knowing that Allah is One, self-sufficient, and the Guardian of all. Let this verse inspire you to seek the truth with an open heart, for the path to Allah is clear, and His mercy encompasses all who turn to Him.
