📖 English Meaning
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.

Meanings of Key Words:

  • Yushraka bihi (أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ): To associate partners with Allah in worship, devotion, or divinity.
  • Ma duna dhalik (مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ): Anything less than shirk (polytheism) — i.e., all other sins and disobediences.
  • Iftara (افْتَرَىٰ): To invent, fabricate, or falsely attribute something — here, to commit a grave falsehood against Allah.
  • Ithman 'aziman (إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا): A tremendous, enormous sin.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse delivers one of the most profound and hope-filled messages in the Qur'an, while simultaneously drawing a firm line that every believer must understand. Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, declares that He does not forgive the sin of shirk — associating any partner with Him in worship, whether it be idols, people, prophets, angels, or any created thing. This is the greatest transgression against the very essence of Allah's oneness and majesty. Shirk is the only sin that Allah has explicitly excluded from His forgiveness for those who die upon it, because it corrupts the very foundation of faith and the purpose of creation itself.

However, immediately after this stern warning, Allah opens the door of hope wide: "And He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." This means that every other sin — no matter how great, how repeated, or how shameful — lies within the realm of Allah's forgiveness. Sins like lying, stealing, backbiting, drinking alcohol, or even major transgressions are not beyond Allah's pardon. He forgives them for whomever He wills, by His grace and mercy, or He may punish them for whomever He wills, by His justice. This is not a matter of blind fate; rather, it is a call to repentance. For the one who sincerely turns back to Allah, seeks His forgiveness, and abandons the sin, Allah's mercy is vast and His pardon is guaranteed. The mention of "for whom He wills" applies to those who die without repentance; as for the sincere penitent, Allah's forgiveness is certain and unqualified.

The verse then concludes with a powerful warning: "And whoever associates partners with Allah has indeed fabricated a tremendous sin." This is not merely a mistake or a minor lapse — it is a deliberate fabrication, an invention of a lie against Allah, attributing to Him what He never commanded and elevating created beings to His divine station. It is the ultimate injustice against the Creator and against one's own soul.

A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:

Dear reader, let this verse fill your heart with both awe and hope. Awe, because it reminds you of the absolute uniqueness of Allah — there is none like Him, and He alone deserves your worship, your love, and your submission. Hope, because it tells you that no matter how many sins you have committed, the door of forgiveness is wide open for you — as long as you do not fall into shirk and as long as you turn back to Allah in sincere repentance.

If you find yourself burdened by past mistakes, know that Allah's mercy is greater than your sins. He does not ask you to be perfect; He asks you to return to Him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah says: O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and hope in Me, I will forgive you for what you have done, and I do not mind. O son of Adam, if your sins were to reach the clouds of the sky, then you sought My forgiveness, I would forgive you." (Tirmidhi)

So do not despair of Allah's mercy, and do not delay your return to Him. But equally, do not take His mercy as a license to sin, and never let anything or anyone take His place in your heart. Guard your tawheed (monotheism) as your most precious treasure, and let every breath you take be a step closer to your Lord. For He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, and He loves those who turn to Him in repentance.

📜 Verse 46-50 — An-Nisa

Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] usages and say, "We hear and disobey" and "Hear but be not heard" and "Ra'ina," twisting their tongues and defaming the religion. And if they had said [instead], "We hear and obey" and "Wait for us [to understand]," it would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.
O you who were given the Scripture, believe in what We have sent down [to Muhammad], confirming that which is with you, before We obliterate faces and turn them toward their backs or curse them as We cursed the sabbath-breakers. And ever is the decree of Allah accomplished.
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
Have you not seen those who claim themselves to be pure? Rather, Allah purifies whom He wills, and injustice is not done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed].
Look how they invent about Allah untruth, and sufficient is that as a manifest sin.
