Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have been given the Scripture—the Jews and the Christians—believe sincerely and act upon what We have sent down to Our final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), namely the Qur'an. This Qur'an confirms the truth that is already with you in the Torah and the Gospel, affirming the core messages of monotheism and the coming of the final Prophet. Do this before the punishment of Allah descends upon you, for His decree is certain and His justice is swift.
Allah warns of two possible punishments if they persist in disbelief: First, He may erase their faces—blotting out their eyes, noses, and brows—and turn them backward, so that their faces become like the backs of their heads, a terrifying disfigurement that strips them of their human dignity. Second, He may curse them as He cursed the people of the Sabbath—those Jews who transgressed by fishing on Saturday despite being explicitly forbidden. Their punishment was to be transformed into despised apes and swine, cast out from Allah's mercy entirely.
This is a dire warning, but it is also an invitation of mercy. Allah is not quick to punish; He gives ample time for repentance and faith. The verse calls them to embrace the truth while the door is still open, before the inevitable decree of Allah takes effect. And the command of Allah is always fulfilled—nothing can delay it or stand in its way.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity, not just the People of the Book. It reminds us that Allah's mercy is vast, but so is His justice. He sent the Qur'an as a final, unaltered guidance—a book that confirms the truth in all previous scriptures and perfects the message for all times. The invitation to believe is open to everyone, regardless of background, until the very last moment of life. But once the decree passes, there is no turning back.
Let this be a moment of self-reflection: Have we truly embraced the message of the Qur'an with our hearts and actions? Have we recognized the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the seal of all prophets, whose coming was foretold in earlier scriptures? The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is greater than any sin. Do not delay, for the command of Allah is certain, and the wise are those who respond before it is too late. Embrace the light of faith, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.
