Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yuzakkūna anfusahum – They praise and purify themselves; they commend their own deeds and declare themselves free from fault or sin.
- Yuzakkī – He purifies, cleanses, and commends; only Allah truly knows who is pure and worthy of praise.
- Fatīl – The thin thread-like membrane that lies in the groove of a date pit; used here to denote the smallest, most insignificant amount.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have you not seen, O Messenger, the case of those who shower praise upon themselves and their own deeds, claiming purity and righteousness for their own souls? They boast of their virtues and present themselves as models of piety, yet this very act reveals their ignorance and arrogance. Allah, the All-Knowing, rebukes this self-glorification, for true purity is not a matter of self-declaration but of divine acknowledgment. It is Allah alone who purifies and commends whom He wills from among His servants, for He alone knows the hidden depths of hearts, the sincerity of intentions, and the reality of deeds. No one can attain true honor or righteousness by their own claim; it is a gift from Allah, granted to those whom He chooses. And even when Allah purifies a servant, He does so with perfect justice—He will not wrong anyone, not even by the smallest measure, not even by the amount of a thin thread inside a date pit. Every good deed will be fully rewarded, and every soul will be treated with absolute fairness.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: let us not be deceived by our own opinions of ourselves. How easy it is to fall into the trap of self-admiration, to look at our prayers, our charity, our knowledge, and feel a sense of pride. Yet the Quran gently corrects this path, turning our gaze away from ourselves and toward Allah alone. It teaches us humility—that we are not the judges of our own worth, but Allah is. So, instead of praising ourselves, let us strive to purify our intentions, seek Allah’s mercy, and ask Him to cleanse our hearts from arrogance and vanity. For the one whom Allah purifies is truly successful, and His reward is beyond measure—never diminished, never unjust. This is the beauty of Islam: it frees us from the burden of self-justification and places our trust entirely in the Most Merciful, who knows us better than we know ourselves. Let us therefore turn to Him with sincere hearts, seeking His pleasure, and leave the judgment to Him alone.
