Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khā'inat al-A'yun (خَائِنَةَ الْأَعْيُنِ): The treacherous glance of the eyes — the stealthy, secret look that steals a glimpse at what is forbidden or what one should not see.
- Mā tukhfī al-Ṣudūr (مَا تُخْفِي الصُّدُورُ): What the hearts conceal and keep hidden within — whether of intentions, thoughts, secrets, good or evil.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, declares that He knows the treacherous glance of the eyes — that fleeting, secret look that a person casts when they think no one is watching. He sees the eye that steals a glance at what is forbidden, the look of one who harbors suspicion or ill intent, and the subtle movement of the eye that betrays what the heart desires to keep hidden. Nothing escapes His knowledge, not even the blink of an eye or the faintest shift of a gaze.
And He also knows what the hearts conceal — the innermost thoughts, the hidden intentions, the secrets that a person buries deep within their chest. Whether it is good or evil, faith or hypocrisy, love or hatred, sincerity or deceit — all of it is fully known to Allah. The heart may hide its secrets from people, but it cannot hide anything from its Creator, who is closer to a person than their own jugular vein.
This verse instills in the believer a profound awareness that Allah is ever-watchful over every movement and every hidden thought. It calls upon the believer to purify their inner self, to guard their eyes from forbidden glances, and to fill their hearts with sincerity and righteousness — for nothing remains hidden from Allah, and every secret will be brought to light on the Day of Judgment.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, how often do we cast a glance thinking no one sees? How often do we harbor a thought believing it is our private secret? This verse reminds us that Allah sees the unseen, knows the hidden, and is fully aware of the most subtle of matters. Let this knowledge fill your heart with awe and reverence, and let it motivate you to guard your eyes, purify your intentions, and cleanse your heart of every impurity. For the One who knows the treachery of the eyes and the secrets of the chest is the One who will judge you with perfect justice and boundless mercy. Strive to be among those whose outward actions match their inner purity, and whose hearts are filled with love for Allah and His Messenger — for such are the successful ones in this life and the Hereafter.
