Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Al-Azifah (الْآزِفَةِ): The "Imminent" or "Near at Hand" — a name for the Day of Resurrection, emphasizing its closeness, for everything that is coming is near.
- Al-Hanajir (الْحَنَاجِرِ): The throats or windpipes.
- Kazimin (كَاظِمِينَ): Suppressing grief and anguish, choking with sorrow, unable to speak or breathe freely.
- Hamim (حَمِيمٍ): A close relative, a warm friend, or an intimate companion who can offer help.
- Shafi'un Yuta' (شَفِيعٍ يُطَاعُ): An intercessor whose intercession is accepted and obeyed.
The Interpretation:
O Messenger, warn your people and all of humanity of the Day of Resurrection — the Day that is so near, even though the disbelievers deem it far off. It is called "Al-Azifah" because its arrival is certain and imminent; every coming event is close at hand.
On that Day, the terror will be so overwhelming that hearts will leap from their places in the chests and rise up to the throats, choking their owners. People will be utterly silenced, their faces pale, their eyes fixed, unable to utter a word except by the permission of Allah. They will be filled with grief and sorrow, their breath trapped in their throats as they await the final judgment.
On that Day, the wrongdoers — those who associated partners with Allah and persisted in sin — will find no intimate friend, no close relative, and no intercessor whose word is accepted. Every bond of kinship and friendship that they relied upon in this world will be severed. No one will be able to speak on their behalf, and no intercession will benefit them, for they have rejected the truth and turned away from their Lord.
A Call to Reflection:
This vivid description is not meant to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts while we still have time. The Day is nearer than we think — closer than our next breath. Yet, the door of mercy remains wide open. Today, you can turn to your Lord in repentance, and He will accept you. Today, you can build a relationship with Him through prayer, charity, and kindness, so that on that Day, you will not need an intercessor — for your own deeds and your faith in Allah's mercy will speak for you. Do not wait until hearts reach throats and no friend can help. Come back to Allah now, and let His peace fill your heart before that Day arrives.
