Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Fa-staqeemoo ilayh": Direct yourselves towards Him, remain steadfast and upright in obedience to Him alone.
- "Wail": Severe destruction, ruin, and a painful punishment.
- "Al-Mushrikeen": Those who associate partners with Allah in worship, whether by worshipping idols, other beings, or anything alongside Him.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, say to those who stubbornly reject the message: "I am only a human being like you. I am not an angel, nor do I possess any supernatural power, nor do I claim divinity. The only distinction I have is that Allah has chosen to reveal to me the greatest truth: that your God — the only One truly worthy of worship — is One God alone, with no partner, no equal, and no rival."
This statement carries a profound lesson: the Prophet ﷺ was a human, yet Allah honoured him with revelation. This means that every human being can receive guidance, and no one has an excuse to say, "I am only human." If a human can be the best of creation through submission to Allah, then every human can rise by following that same path.
Then Allah commands: "So direct yourselves straight towards Him" — meaning, turn your hearts, your intentions, and your actions to Allah alone, walk the straight path that leads to Him, and do not deviate to the right or left. And "seek His forgiveness" — for your shortcomings, your sins, and your failures, because no one is free from error, and the door of repentance is always open.
Then comes a stern warning: "And woe to the polytheists" — those who associate partners with Allah, who worship idols that can neither benefit nor harm them, who refuse to purify their souls through the worship of the One True God, and who fail to establish prayer, give charity, or believe in the Hereafter. Their destruction is certain, both in this world and in the next.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse beautifully balances hope and fear. It begins with mercy — telling us that the Messenger is one of us, approachable, and that Allah's door is open for forgiveness. But it also warns with justice — that those who persist in shirk and reject the truth will face ruin. So let every soul take heed: the path to Allah is clear, the guide is a human like us, and the reward is eternal success. Do not delay your return to your Lord, for He is waiting for you with open arms of mercy, and His forgiveness is greater than all your sins combined.
