Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Az-Zakah (الزكاة): Literally means purification and growth. In this context, it refers to the obligatory charity that purifies one's wealth and soul, and in a broader sense, it signifies the purification of the soul through faith and righteous deeds.
  • Al-Akhirah (الآخرة): The Hereafter — the eternal life after death, including the Resurrection, Judgment, Paradise, and Hellfire.
  • Kafirun (كافرون): Those who deny and reject the truth, specifically here, those who deny the Hereafter and its realities.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues to describe the fate of the polytheists who associate partners with Allah. After mentioning their shirk (polytheism) and their refusal to pay charity, Allah describes them as those who "do not give the Zakah" — meaning they do not purify themselves or their wealth. This includes two key aspects:

First, they do not purify their souls from the filth of shirk by affirming the Oneness of Allah (La ilaha illa Allah). Their hearts are not cleansed of false worship, and they do not establish the prayer or fulfill the rights of Allah upon their wealth. They are so engrossed in their worldly desires and idolatry that they neglect the very acts that would purify their faith and their possessions.

Second, they are described as those who "in the Hereafter, they are disbelievers." Their denial is not merely a lack of knowledge — it is a stubborn rejection of the truth. They do not believe in the Resurrection, nor in the Day of Judgment, nor in the eternal bliss of Paradise or the torment of Hellfire. Because they deny the Hereafter, their actions are devoid of any hope for reward or fear of punishment, and thus they live a life of heedlessness, neither benefiting themselves through faith nor benefiting others through charity.

This verse highlights a profound connection: the denial of the Hereafter leads to the abandonment of both spiritual and social obligations. When a person does not believe in accountability before Allah, they see no reason to purify their soul or spend their wealth in the way of Allah. Their hearts are sealed, and their deeds are rendered worthless.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. It teaches us that true faith is not merely a claim of the tongue — it is a reality that transforms the heart and manifests in action. The Zakah is not just a financial obligation; it is a means of purifying your soul from stinginess and your wealth from impurity. When you give charity sincerely for the sake of Allah, you are not losing anything — rather, you are investing in your eternal future.

And the Hereafter — how beautiful is the belief in it! It gives meaning to every hardship, every sacrifice, and every good deed. It is the ultimate justice, where no good deed is lost and no wrong is unpunished. So let this verse be a reminder for you to purify your heart with faith, your wealth with charity, and your life with the hope of meeting your Lord. Do not be like those who denied the Hereafter and lost everything — rather, be among those who believe, give, and look forward to the eternal bliss that awaits the righteous.

📜 Verse 5-9 — Fussilat

And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work; indeed, we are working."
Say, O [Muhammad], "I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed that your god is but one God; so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness." And woe to those who associate others with Allah -
Those who do not give zakah, and in the Hereafter they are disbelievers.
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them is a reward uninterrupted.
Say, "Do you indeed disbelieve in He who created the earth in two days and attribute to Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds."
