Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَكِنَّةٍ (Akinna): Covers or veils that completely conceal something, preventing it from being perceived.
- وَقْرٌ (Waqr): Heaviness or deafness in the ears, blocking sound from being heard.
- حِجَابٌ (Hijab): A barrier or partition that separates two things.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty tells us about the stubborn response of the disbelievers to the call of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They said, addressing him: "Our hearts are wrapped in coverings that prevent us from understanding what you call us to. There is heaviness and deafness in our ears, so we cannot hear your words. And between us and you there is a barrier—a separation in religion and belief—so we will not respond to your warning or follow you." Then they defiantly added: "So work according to your religion, and we will work according to ours; we will never follow you."
They said this not because they genuinely could not understand, but as a stubborn refusal and an attempt to make the Prophet (peace be upon him) lose hope in their acceptance of his message. Their hearts were sealed due to their arrogance and persistence in falsehood, and they used these excuses to justify their rejection of the truth.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, look at how these people closed every door to guidance with their own hands. They claimed their hearts were covered, their ears were deaf, and a barrier stood between them and the truth—yet the truth was clear and radiant. The Prophet (peace be upon him) continued to call them with wisdom and kindness, but they chose to remain in their darkness.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: do not let pride or stubbornness seal your heart against the truth. The Quran is a light that illuminates every sincere soul, and Allah opens the hearts of those who seek Him with humility. If you find your heart heavy or your ears unresponsive, know that the remedy is sincere supplication: "O Allah, open my heart to Your guidance and make the Quran the spring of my heart and the light of my chest."
The door of repentance is always open, and Allah welcomes every servant who turns to Him. Do not be like those who said, "We will not listen," for they lost the greatest treasure—the knowledge of their Lord and the peace that comes with faith. Embrace the call of truth today, and you will find happiness in this life and the next.
