Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Umm al-Qurā (أُمَّ الْقُرَى): Literally "Mother of Cities," referring to Makkah, as it is the most honored and central city.
- Yawm al-Jam‘ (يَوْمِ الْجَمْعِ): The Day of Gathering, another name for the Day of Resurrection, when all of creation—earlier and later generations—will be assembled in one plain for judgment.
- Sa‘īr (السَّعِير): The blazing, fiercely burning Fire of Hell.
Explanation of the Verse:
Just as We revealed Our messages to the prophets before you, O Muhammad, in their own languages so they could convey the truth to their peoples, so too have We revealed to you a Qur’an in clear Arabic. This is not a new or strange occurrence—it is the same divine pattern of revelation, sent down with wisdom and clarity.
The purpose of this revelation is twofold. First, you are commanded to warn the inhabitants of Makkah—the mother of all cities, the heart of Arabia—and those around it, meaning all of humanity in every land and every era until the end of time. The message is universal, yet it begins at the center, just as light radiates from a single source to illuminate the entire world.
Second, you are to warn people of the Day of Gathering—the Day of Resurrection—a day whose coming is certain and beyond any doubt. On that day, Allah will assemble all of creation, from the first to the last, in one vast plain. There will be no intercession without His permission, no escape, and no denial of what the eyes will witness.
On that day, humanity will split into two distinct groups with no third category. One group will be in Paradise—these are the believers who affirmed Allah’s oneness, believed in His messengers, and followed what Muhammad ﷺ brought. They will dwell in eternal bliss, enjoying gardens beneath which rivers flow, in the company of the righteous. The other group will be in the blazing Fire—these are those who rejected faith, denied the truth, and opposed the messengers. They will taste the agony of burning flames, a punishment that never ends.
This verse carries a profound call to every soul: the revelation is a mercy and a warning, and the choice is yours. The Day of Gathering is real, and your destination—whether in the gardens of delight or the flames of Sa‘īr—depends on how you respond to this divine message today. Let this be a moment of reflection: your Lord did not leave you without guidance. He sent you a Book in a language you can understand, a Messenger who is a mercy to all worlds, and a clear path that leads to eternal success. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world blind you to the everlasting reality that awaits. Embrace the truth now, before the Day arrives when no soul can bargain for another, and every person will reap exactly what they have sown.
