Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Tastawū" – to settle firmly, to be seated or established upon something.
- "Ẓuhūrih" – the backs (of the riding animals or vessels).
- "Sakhkhara" – to subjugate, tame, or make something subservient for someone's use.
- "Muqrinīn" – those who are able to control or master something; those who have full power over it.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of Allah's countless blessings upon humanity, specifically the blessing of transportation—whether it be animals, ships, or modern means of travel. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made these means subservient to us, so that we may mount them and travel with ease across land and sea.
The verse instructs us on the proper etiquette and mindset when we ride: "That you may settle yourselves upon their backs, then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them." This is a call to mindfulness—when you have firmly taken your place on your mount or vehicle, do not let your heart be heedless. Instead, turn your attention to the One who made this possible. Remember that it is Allah alone who granted you this ability, for without His subjugation of these creatures and objects, you would never have been able to control them.
Then, the verse teaches us the specific supplication to say: "And say: 'Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have mastered it ourselves.'" This phrase is a profound acknowledgment of human limitation and divine power. We admit that we are not inherently capable of taming these beasts or harnessing these forces; it is only by Allah's will and mercy that they obey us. This instills humility in the heart and prevents arrogance, reminding us that all our achievements are ultimately gifts from above.
The verse concludes with the continuation of this remembrance: "And indeed, to our Lord we will surely return." This part, though not in the main text of the verse, is understood from the context and the Prophet's ﷺ teaching. When you settle on your ride, you should also remember that just as Allah brought you to this journey safely, He will also bring you back to Him at the end of your life's journey. This reflection connects the physical journey to the spiritual one, reminding us that our ultimate destination is the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and think about how often you travel—by car, plane, ship, or even on the back of an animal. How many times have you boarded a vehicle without a second thought? This verse gently awakens us from that heedlessness. It turns a mundane act into an act of worship and a moment of deep connection with Allah.
When you say *"Subḥāna alladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā"*, you are glorifying Allah and declaring His perfection. You are testifying that He is far above any weakness or need, and that He alone has the power to make the difficult easy. This simple phrase transforms your journey into a spiritual experience, filling your heart with gratitude and your tongue with praise.
Islam is not a religion of rituals confined to mosques; it is a way of life that sanctifies every moment. Even the act of boarding a vehicle becomes an opportunity to remember your Creator, to humble yourself before Him, and to strengthen your bond with Him. This is the beauty of Islam—it teaches you to live every second with awareness of Allah, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
So, the next time you travel, remember this verse. Let your heart be filled with awe at Allah's power, gratitude for His blessings, and hope for your return to Him. And know that by doing so, you are following the guidance of the Qur'an and the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who taught us to say these very words. May Allah make us among those who remember Him in all their states and who are grateful for His countless favors.
