Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Azwāj (الأزواج): All pairs, kinds, species, or categories of creation—such as male and female, night and day, land and sea, and every other opposite or paired form in existence.
- Al-Fulk (الفلك): Ships and vessels that sail upon the sea.
- Al-An‘ām (الأنعام): Grazing livestock, such as camels, cattle, sheep, and goats—and by extension, other riding animals like horses, mules, and donkeys.
- Tarkabūn (تركبون): You ride or mount, whether for travel, transport of goods, or other beneficial purposes.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse directs our hearts and minds to the boundless mercy and power of Allah, the Creator of all things. He alone is the One who brought into existence every pair and every kind of creation—from the smallest insect to the vastest celestial body, from the alternation of night and day to the diversity of plants and animals, and from the male and female of every species to the countless other opposites that fill the universe. All of this is a sign of His perfect wisdom and absolute sovereignty.
Then, in His infinite kindness, Allah singled out humanity for a special favor: He made for us means of transport on both land and sea. He created ships that carry us across the oceans, bearing our goods and our loved ones through waves that would otherwise overwhelm us. And He created livestock—camels, cattle, horses, mules, and donkeys—so that we may ride them on land, traverse distant valleys and deserts, and reach destinations that would otherwise be impossible to reach on foot. These are not mere coincidences; they are deliberate gifts from the Most Merciful, designed to ease our lives and remind us of His care.
Reflect, dear reader: Who is it that taught you to harness the wind for sails, to shape wood and metal into vessels that float upon water, and to tame and train animals that are far stronger than you? It is Allah, the All-Wise, who placed in your mind the intelligence, in your hands the skill, and in the world the resources to make all of this possible. Every time you board a ship or mount an animal, let it be a moment of gratitude and remembrance. For these blessings are not only practical—they are living lessons in the greatness of the Creator, inviting you to know Him, love Him, and submit to Him alone.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How many of us climb into a car, board a plane, or ride an animal without a second thought? Yet every single journey is a miracle of divine provision. Allah did not have to make these things subservient to us—but He did, out of His mercy. So let your heart overflow with thanks, and let your tongue utter praise. Say: *“Glory be to Him who has subjected these to us, for we could never have done it ourselves. And surely, to our Lord, we will return.”* (Quran 43:13-14). This is the natural response of a grateful believer—one who sees the hand of Allah in every blessing and turns every ride, every voyage, into an act of worship and a step closer to His pleasure. Embrace this truth, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next.
