Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Fantaqamna (فَانتَقَمْنَا): We took retribution or vengeance — meaning the divine punishment that follows persistent rejection of the truth.
  • Al-Mukadhdhibin (الْمُكَذِّبِينَ): Those who deny and reject the messengers and the signs of Allah, persisting in their disbelief despite clear evidence.

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning the nations of old who rejected their prophets — such as the people of Pharaoh, the Thamud, and others — Allah declares that He took retribution from them. This punishment came in various forms: some were drowned, some were struck by a mighty blast, some were swallowed by the earth, and others were destroyed by overwhelming calamities. Their power, wealth, and numbers could not protect them from the decree of their Lord.

Then Allah directs His address to His Messenger, peace be upon him, saying: "Look and see how the end of those who denied the truth turned out." This is an invitation to reflect deeply on history — not merely as stories of the past, but as living lessons. Their end was utter ruin and humiliation in this world, followed by the torment of the Hereafter, which is far greater and more lasting.

This verse also carries a profound warning to the Quraysh and to all who hear this message: if they persist in rejecting the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, they risk facing the same fate as those who came before them. The One who destroyed those mighty nations is fully capable of dealing with those who oppose His final revelation.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause with me for a moment. The Qur'an is not a book of ancient tales — it is a living guide, and its warnings are as relevant today as they were fourteen centuries ago. When you see the ruins of past civilizations or read about the fall of arrogant powers, know that this is the sunnah (way) of Allah — His consistent law — that falsehood, no matter how strong it appears, will ultimately collapse before the truth.

This verse invites you to be among those who learn from the lessons of history, not those who repeat its mistakes. The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not let pride or stubbornness prevent you from submitting to the truth. Embrace Islam with a sincere heart, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. The choice is yours — to be among the successful believers or among those whose end is regret. May Allah guide us all to the straight path.

📜 Verse 23-27 — Az-Zukhruf

And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."
[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."
So we took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship
Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."
