Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Barā’ (بَرَاء): A verbal noun meaning complete disassociation, innocence, and freedom from any connection or responsibility. It signifies a total and unequivocal separation from something.
  • Mimmā ta‘budūn (مِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ): From that which you worship — referring to the idols and false deities they served besides Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to remind his people of a powerful moment in history — when Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) stood before his own father and his community and declared with absolute clarity: *"Indeed, I am completely free and disassociated from what you worship."*

This was not a casual statement; it was a revolutionary declaration of faith. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) faced his own flesh and blood — his father — and the people who raised him, and he told them plainly: I have nothing to do with your idols, your false gods, or your way of worship. I am innocent of all of it. This declaration came at a time when idol worship was deeply entrenched in his society, and when standing against it meant risking everything — family ties, social standing, and even his life.

Yet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not waver. He made his position unmistakably clear, drawing a firm line between truth and falsehood. He did not compromise, dilute, or hide his belief to please others. His words carried the weight of certainty: *"I am free from what you worship."*

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the foundation of faith is loyalty to Allah alone and disavowal of everything worshipped besides Him. True faith requires courage — the courage to stand for truth even when it means opposing those closest to you. It teaches us that love for family and community should never override our commitment to Allah. When the truth is clear, we must declare it with confidence and grace, just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did.

Moreover, this verse comforts the believers — reminding them that they are not alone in their struggle. The greatest of Allah’s prophets faced similar challenges, yet remained steadfast. So take heart, dear believer: when you uphold the truth, you walk in the footsteps of Ibrahim, the friend of Allah (Khalilullah). And there is no nobler path than that.

📜 Verse 24-28 — Az-Zukhruf

[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."
So we took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship
Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."
And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].
