Word Meanings:

(Ayah): A sign, miracle, or proof.
(Ukhtiha): Literally "its sister," meaning the one that came before it—the preceding sign.
(Al-'Adhab): The punishment or torment.
(Yarji'un): They return, meaning turning back from disbelief to faith.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the story of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and his encounters with Pharaoh and his people. Allah tells us that every sign or miracle He showed them—whether it was the staff turning into a serpent, the shining hand, the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, or the blood—was greater and more conclusive than the one before it. Each miracle was a decisive proof of Musa's truthfulness and a clear demonstration of Allah's absolute power.

Yet despite these escalating signs, Pharaoh and his chiefs remained obstinate. So Allah seized them with various forms of punishment—drought, famine, and devastating calamities—not out of cruelty, but as a mercy in disguise. The purpose was to soften their hearts, awaken their consciences, and give them the opportunity to turn back from their arrogance and disbelief to the worship of the One True God. Each trial was a call to repentance, an invitation to return to their Lord before the final and unavoidable punishment of the Hereafter would descend upon them.

A Call to Reflection:

How merciful is our Lord! Even when people reject His signs and persist in wrongdoing, He sends gentle reminders and trials in this world—not to destroy them, but to bring them back to Him. When you face difficulties in life, pause and reflect: perhaps your Lord is calling you, knocking on the door of your heart, inviting you to return to Him. Do not wait until the signs become too great or the trials too heavy. Turn to Allah now, with sincerity and humility, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He loves those who repent and return to Him. Every hardship is an opportunity; every trial is a message of love from your Creator, saying: "Come back to Me."

📜 Verse 46-50 — Az-Zukhruf

And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."
But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.
And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].
And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."
But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.
