Word Meanings:

  • As-Sāhir (الساحر): In this context, it means "the learned one" or "the master scholar." Among the people of that time, a "sāhir" was a title of great respect and reverence, not a term of blame—for they held sorcerers in high esteem. It was their way of acknowledging exceptional knowledge and skill.
  • Bimā ʿahida ʿindak (بما عهد عندك): "By the covenant He has made with you"—referring to the special promise and distinction Allah granted to Moses (peace be upon him) of having his supplications answered.
  • Lamuh'tadūn (لمهتدون): "We will surely be guided"—meaning they would become believers and follow the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the severe punishments—such as the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the flood—struck the people of Pharaoh as a consequence of their stubborn denial, they turned to Moses (peace be upon him) in desperation. They addressed him with the title "O sorcerer," which, in their custom, was a term of honor for a man of profound knowledge and skill. They did not mean it as an insult, for sorcery was held in high regard among them; rather, they acknowledged his superiority and his special status with Allah.

They pleaded: "Call upon your Lord for us by the covenant He has made with you"—that is, by the special favor and honor He has granted you, and by the promise that your supplication is answered. They attached a condition to their request: "If He removes this punishment from us, then we will surely be guided." They vowed to believe in you, to follow your message, and to abandon their disbelief and arrogance.

This was a desperate, conditional promise—a last-minute attempt to escape the torment. Yet, as the Qur'an narrates in the following verses, when Allah did lift the punishment out of His mercy, they broke their word and persisted in their denial. This reveals a profound truth about human nature: when hardship strikes, people often turn to Allah and make sincere-sounding promises, but when ease returns, they forget their vows and slip back into heedlessness.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect deeply upon this scene. Here were the most powerful tyrants of their time—Pharaoh and his chiefs—humbled before a prophet, begging him to intercede for them with Allah. They acknowledged his greatness and the power of his supplication. Yet, the moment their suffering ended, they returned to their arrogance and disbelief.

This is a timeless lesson for every soul. How often do we, in moments of difficulty, turn to Allah with heartfelt promises: "If You heal me, I will pray; if You grant me this, I will give charity; if You relieve my distress, I will change my ways"? And how often, when the trial passes, do we forget those promises and return to our old habits?

Allah, in His infinite mercy, listens to His servants and responds to their calls. He is Al-Karīm (the Most Generous), Al-Mujīb (the Answerer of Prayers). But He also tests the sincerity of our words. Let your promise to Allah be firm and unbreakable, not conditional and fleeting. Turn to Him in times of ease as you turn to Him in times of hardship. Let your faith be a constant companion, not a fair-weather friend.

The gates of repentance are always open, and Allah's mercy encompasses all things. Do not wait for a calamity to remind you of your Lord. Come to Him now, willingly and lovingly, and you will find Him waiting with open arms, ready to forgive, to guide, and to bless. For He has said in His holy Book: "And when My servants ask you concerning Me—indeed, I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me" (Qur'an 2:186).

📜 Verse 47-51 — Az-Zukhruf

But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.
And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].
And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."
But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.
And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?
